January transfer window breaks multiple records in both men's and women's football with English clubs the biggest spenders

The January transfer window set new records in both the men’s and women’s games, a study has revealed.

The window for British clubs closed on January 30 for the women and Monday for the men. 

And FIFA’s International Transfer Snapshot has confirmed that a total of 5,863 international transfers were made worldwide in the men’s professional game in the month. 

This is the highest total ever for a January window, marking a 20 per cent increase from the previous record set one year ago.

A total of £1.89billion was spent by clubs on transfer fees, which is also the highest of any January transfer window. 

That amount is 57.9 per cent higher than last January and 47.1 per cent above the record set in January 2023.

It was also a record-breaking month for the women’s game with £4.65m spent, an increase of 180 per cent from the previous record from last year.

455 players moved clubs, up 22.6 per cent from January 2024. 

English clubs were the top spenders in both men’s (£499m) and women’s (£1.85m) football during the window.

Man City were the biggest single spenders, signing Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico Gonzalez for a total of around £190m.
