Fans have accused Joey Barton of ‘racism’ following a controversial post on social media.
Taking to X on Wednesday morning, Barton responded to a video that showed ‘an old German woman’ and her ‘new young boyfriend’ sitting on a beach in Africa.
Bizarrely, Barton wrote: ‘Patrice Evra will do anything to stay relevant’. It’s remains unclear as to why the former midfielder took aim at the Man United legend.
The video of the woman and the man showcased their discussion over him waiting to receive documents that could allow them to live together in Germany.
It didn’t take long for fans to quickly respond to the bizarre comparison with one writing: ‘The irony of this ridiculous and racist post from a guy who has seemingly tried to say as many controversial things as possible to stay relevant is outrageous’.
In a sarcastic take, another wrote: ‘Hahaha good one Joey! Because every black man with glasses looks like Patrice Evra to you! Proper banter that! Really funny’.

Barton made a bizarre comparison with Manchester United legend Patrice Evra
He compared Evra to a random man sat on a beach, in a video that appeared on X
‘Can’t keep the racism in for long,’ another said. ‘One of the strangest posts ever. Did it sound better in your head,’ said one user. ‘Racist p****’, one user wrote.
‘Nothing racist about that comment is there,’ another said sarcastically.
The bizarre comparison with Evra is the latest controversial comment – having previously spoken out against former England star and pundit Eni Aluko.
Back in July, Barton was charged with alleged ‘malicious communications’ towards Aluko – and branded the legal system a ‘banana republic’ in response.
In January, the former Premier League footballer compared Aluko and fellow pundit Lucy Ward to the serial killers Fred and Rose West.
Responding to the charges, Barton wrote on X: ‘I’m up next month for “malicious communications” charge at Warrington Mag for Eni Aluko tweets.
‘Crazy times we’re living in. Haven’t the Police got enough on their hands?
‘British system is becoming a Banana Republic. Lawfare used against its own citizens for having a dissenting voice.’
Fans were quick to call out Barton for ‘racism’ following the bizarre comparison
In February Aluko accused Barton of subjecting her to one of the worst cases of social media abuse I’ve ever experienced’ after a stream of vile messages.
After she covered Crystal Palace’s FA Cup draw with Everton in January with Ward, Barton had written: ‘How is she even talking about men’s football?
‘She can’t even kick a ball properly. Your coverage of the game EFC last night, took it to a new low. Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward, the Fred and Rose West of football commentary.’
The Wests murdered 12 women and young girls over the course of 20 years. Fred took his own life before facing trial while Rose was sentenced to 10 life terms. She remains in prison aged 70.
Barton then stoked the fire further by making his criticism even more extreme, writing that Aluko was ‘clearly in the Joseph Stalin category’ for ‘murdering hundreds of thousands of fans’ ears’.
Meanwhile, Barton also caused controversy in the summer when he backed Mason Greenwood’s move to Marseille despite many fans reacting furiously to his arrival.

Livid Marseille fans launched a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign after initial links, but Barton, who played for the Ligue 1 side in 2012-13, is adamant he ‘deserves a chance’.
‘That is a great signing. This kid deserves a chance to get on with his career,’ Barton wrote on X.
‘We all make mistakes. Nobody’s perfect. England would have won the Euros with this kid in the side.
‘He’s as good a player as any in that Euros squad. His behaviour and the public fallout has massively affected his performance, yet he went to an average team in Spain and got himself back on track!’
