Kalvin Phillips to Report Early for Man City Pre-Season Training

Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips will reportedly make an early return to pre-season training in a bid to reignite his career.

The former Leeds United star has endured a nightmare couple of years since his £45million switch to the Etihad from Elland Road.

Phillips found gametime hard to come by in his debut campaign and his attempts to get first team minutes – and ensure he made the England squad for Euro 2024 – ended in disaster with a dismal loan spell at West Ham.

The 28-year-old’s form ultimately cost him his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the tournament in Germany.

According to The Sun, the midfielder has let his parent club know that he will return to the training ground a couple of weeks earlier than planned, before Pep Guardiola and members of the squad on international duty are due to report this summer.

Fellow City team-mate Jack Grealish – who was also omitted from Southgate’s Euros squad – has similarly been keen to put in the hard yards in order to impress the Spanish boss.

Grealish helped City and Guardiola win their fourth consecutive Premier League title in May, but struggled at times during the campaign as he battled injuries and squad competition.

The 28-year-old wasted no time in getting back on the pitch, this time choosing to train at one of Juventus’ premises while in Italy.

Sharing a video on his Instagram, Grealish showed himself at the end of a training session on one of the Serie A side’s academy pitches.

The topless update showed Grealish walking around in the sunset on the playing surface as he recovered from the kickabout on the small five-a-side pitch.

The pair will be hopeful of forcing themselves into the City reckoning, though, for Phillips, another loan move seems most likely.

His short spell in east London was ended early after he suffered an injury. Phillips’ Hammers career never got off the ground, with him gifting Bournemouth a goal minutes into his debut.

Phillips also received a red card in one of his three Premier League starts for David Moyes side.
