Lee Carsley’s Unorthodox Methods: How the Interim Boss is Unleashing England’s Young Talent

On Thursday, Lee Carsley named his first squad since being named interim England manager in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s departure.

In addition to retaining a number of stalwarts of the national side, Carsley handed call ups to a several talents who had shined under him for England’s Young Lions.

Here, Mail Sport takes a look at what the potential debutants have to offer ahead of clashes against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

TINO LIVRAMENTO

The Newcastle right back, 21, is the only new face in the squad who wasn’t part of last year’s Under 21 European Championship triumph in Georgia — his omission back then was because of a cruciate ligament injury — but Carsley was so hands-on with Livramento’s development that the pair regularly messaged during his rehabilitation.

The new England boss has used him as a right winger before and believes his skillset offers versatility in a number of positions. Livramento can, in Carsley’s eyes, be used on the left as well.

ANGEL GOMES

Carsley saw something in Gomes when coaching Manchester City’s Under 18s during a derby involving Phil Foden.

The afternoon effectively became Gomes versus Foden in the two No 10 positions, with the United man coming out on top.

Gomes, 23, was a bit-part player in Carsley’s U21 set-up before playing regularly for Lille in 2022.

The physicality of Ligue 1 convinced Carsley that the ability he had seen in that derby could be supplemented by an understanding of how to play as a No 6.

Gomes was the breakout star of last year’s U21 Euros.

NONI MADUEKE

In a bid to add more end product to Madueke’s game last October, Carsley’s U21 backroom team showed him a compilation of goals scored by Mohamed Salah and Kylian Mbappe.

Since then, the 22-year-old Chelsea forward has netted six times in six internationals and added three assists, becoming a focal point for the Young Lions.

Carsley has given Madueke chances as a No 9 but prefers him off the right. In addition to taking the goalscoring advice on board, he has become a more willing runner defensively.

MORGAN GIBBS-WHITE

Gibbs-White was one Carsley had always earmarked as a future England prospect.

A key part of his game with the U21s was harassing defenders and, at that level, he looked to be playing at a different pace to everybody else.

The FA felt Premier League experience would turn Gibbs-White into a senior international and the way he pushes Nottingham Forest forward is similar to what we saw in England’s age groups.

Carsley has played Gibbs-White, 24, as a support striker and generally used him as high up the pitch as possible.
