Mason Greenwood could be set to play his first game in England in more than two years this summer.

The 22-year-old striker joined Marseille from Manchester United on Thursday – 908 days after his most recent appearance for the Old Trafford club.

Greenwood represented United 129 times, scoring 35 goals.

His last game for the Red Devils came in January 2022, shortly before he was arrested on charges including assault and attempted rape, all of which were all later dropped.

Greenwood did not play at all during the 2022-23 campaign but he then spent the following season on loan at Getafe.

He was voted as Getafe’s Player of the Season after providing 10 goals and six assists.

That helped convince Marseille to pay United £27million plus £3.2m in potential add-ons to sign Greenwood.

Greenwood’s unofficial debut for Marseille could come as soon as Sunday when his new club take on Nimes in their first pre-season friendly of the summer.

Marseille will then face SC Toulon on Wednesday before a game against Pau next Saturday.

On August 3, Marseille will travel to Bradford’s Valley Parade to play against Sunderland in their penultimate summer friendly.

If Greenwood features in that match then it will be his first outing in a public game in England in two years, six months and 12 days.

Bradford is Greenwood’s home town. He was born and raised in the Yorkshire city before moving to Manchester after joining United’s academy.

Marseille completed the signing of Greenwood despite vocal opposition from a significant section of the club’s fanbase.

The city’s mayor Benoit Payan also publicly opposed the move.
