Mbappe’s Absence from Training Ahead of Euro 2024 Opener

France have been given a slight scare ahead of Euro 2024 after Kylian Mbappe missed training on Saturday, nine days before the tournament kicks off.

The French skipper was absent from training as the national team prepare for Sunday’s friendly against Canada – their final warm-up before their opening clash with Austria in Germany.

Initially the reason behind Mbappe’s absence was unknown, but L’Equipe have provided an update on the forward.

According to their report, Mbappe is suffering from a back issue and is expected to sit out the clash with Canada on Sunday evening.

There is no muscular issue, and there is little concern over the injury, with his participation in the Euros opener not in question right now.

Questions have been asked after Kylian Mbappe missed training with France on Saturday

Any injury to Mbappe would be a huge blow to France, who go into the tournament as one of the favourites, led by their superstar talisman.

His impact was on full display in France’s win over Luxembourg on Wednesday, when he notched a goal and an assist in the 3-0 win.

That was his 47th strike for his country in 78 games, with him now being third on France’s all-time record-goalscorer list, only behind Thierry Henry and Olivier Giroud on 57.

The question over Mbappe’s absence come at the end of a busy week for the French forward, after his move to Real Madrid was rubber-stamped on Monday.

He has agreed to take a major pay cut  to seal his dream move from PSG, after signing a five-year contract with the Spanish giants.

The 25-year-old is due to receive 15m euros net (£12.8m) a season at Madrid, down from the 25m euros net (£21.4m) he earned in his last season in Paris.

Mbappe will line up next season alongside the likes of Ballon d’Or contenders Vinicius Jnr and Jude Bellingham, as well as Brazil star Rodrygo Goes and fellow new boy Endrick, in what is looking like a formidable array of attacking talent for the European champions.

After Austria, Mbappe’s French side face games against the Netherlands and Poland in Group D.

Didier Deschamps will be looking to banish the memories of the last Euros in 2021, when they were knocked out of the competition in the Round of 16 by Switzerland.

The French were 3-1 up going into the final ten minutes, but the Swiss clawed it back to 3-3 to take it to spot-kicks, where Mbappe missed the vital penalty to see France exit the competition.
