Middlesbrough 'make decision on under-fire Michael Carrick' – after slipping down to 11th in the Championship with six defeats in seven

Middlesbrough have reportedly made their decision on Michael Carrick as the under-fire manager received a vote of confidence from the club’s chairman Steve Gibson.

It comes after the Championship side dropped to 11th place in the league table following their 1-0 defeat by Watford at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

Despite initial aspirations for a promotion at the end of the season, those hopes have now faded as Carrick’s team lost six of their last seven games.

They are currently on a four-game winless streak, with previous losses to Preston, Sunderland, and Sheffield United.

However, according to the Sun, Middlesbrough owner Gibson has decided to stand by the former Manchester United midfielder, who is the Championship’s longest-serving manager at the moment.

With one game in hand, Boro can move up to seventh place in the domestic league, behind West Brom, if they win against Bristol City on Friday.

Recent reports suggested that Gibson was considering the possibility of Carrick’s departure, in hopes that a change could push the team to a play-off place in the Championship.

The board’s upcoming announcements on season ticket renewals have increasingly threatened his position.

Carrick took over as manager of Middlesbrough in October 2022 after a few years spent in Man United’s system.

He joined Boro during their season’s struggles, with just two wins in the last 11 games under former manager Chris Wilder.

Despite recent disappointing results at Middlesbrough, Carrick expressed confidence that his men can turn things around.

Following his defeat by Watford, he said: ‘I think the players believe they can get out of this, because I donโ€™t think they play like they did in the second half if they donโ€™t.

‘Weโ€™re capable, and that goes back to where we get the belief from. We know what we can do. Sport, unfortunately, is not an exact science and things can happen.

‘But I believe in those players and that ultimately drives me on to fight for a way out of the moment weโ€™re in at the moment.’
