Mourinho doubts Euro 2024 success for Fenerbahce due to lack of talent

Jose Mourinho has named one major nation that he doesn’t think stand a chance of lifting the trophy at Euro 2024.

The tournament gets underway on Friday night with hosts Germany taking on Scotland at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena.

England are the favourites to go all the way and end a long wait for a major trophy.

France, Germany and Portugal also have a strong chance according to the bookies while they also believe Spain and Italy have a shot.

However, Mourinho cannot see the Italians retaining the trophy they won at Wembley three years ago.

Jose Mourinho does not believe Italy possess the talent to retain the European Championship

‘I am convinced that practically everyone thinks like me,’ the new Fenerbahce manager said.

‘Portugal, England, France, followed by Germany and Spain. But Italy as European champions? I don’t believe that.

‘Why can’t Italy defend their European title? ‘I don’t think they have enough talent to win the tournament, they won the last European Championship, but I don’t think they’ll do it again.’

Qualifying for the tournament was not easy for Italy, who only clinched second place in Group C, behind England, with a goalless draw against Ukraine in the final game.

They have since had the misfortune of being placed in the group of death at Euro 2024 alongside heavyweights Spain, experienced Croatia and dark horses Albania.

Mourinho is also confident that his country can win the competition for the second time in three editions.

‘I don’t want to be disrespectful to previous generations, but in terms of the depth and quality of the squad, we are probably the best team we have ever had and Portugal can win the European Championship.’
