Neal Maupay aimed at outrageous jibe at Paul Scholes after the Man United legend criticised the Frenchman’s notorious antics on the pitch.
Maupay has been seen copying James Maddison’s darts celebration on multiple occasions, most recently for Marseille last month. He first made fun of the celebration when he was at Brentford, in a 3-2 defeat by Tottenham in February 2024.
After his opening goal, Maupay wheeled away in celebration and proceeded to copy Maddison’s signature move, alongside Ivan Toney, where he imitates the action of throwing a dart.
In a fan debate on The Overlap, Scholes was asked what the difference is between Myles Lewis-Skelly copying Erling Haaland’s celebration and Maupay copying Maddison’s.
Lewis-Skelly mocked Haaland in Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Man City at the Emirates earlier this month; the 18-year-old found the net and proceeded to copy the Norwegian’s celebration, where he sits on the floor in a meditative pose.
Scholes then said that Maupay is an ‘idiot’ and that he ‘takes the p***’, to which Maupay issued a savage response.

‘What’s the difference between [Lewis-Skelly doing Halaand’s celebration] and Maupay doing the darts thing? [Maupay] stole Maddison’s celebration,’ Scholes was asked.
‘He’s an idiot, he just takes the p***,’ he replied.
Maupay took to X to insult Scholes and referenced an incident from 2021, where the former England midfielder was seen chewing his daughter’s toenails.
The striker said: ‘Surprised Paul Scholes can fit my name in his mouth alongside his daughter’s toes,’ followed by a foot emoji.
The clip that Maupay was referring to only lasted a few seconds but showed Scholes giving his daughter a foot massage as he bit her toenails.
Alicia Scholes, who was 20 at the time, posted the video to her thousands of followers on Instagram.
She commented that the video showed ‘true love’, although many social media users were disgusted by the footage.
Maupay is infamously an uber-troll on social media, and even made fun of his parent club Everton in December last year.

Maupay has been seen mocking Maddison’s darts celebration for Brentford and Marseille
The 28-year-old joined the Toffees in August 2022 from Brighton but left last summer to join Marseille on loan, where he now plays.
After Everton suffered a 2-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest on December 29, Maupay took to social media to rub salt in their wounds.
He wrote on X: ‘Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.’
But that fiasco was not the first time Maupay has trolled Everton on social media.
Upon the public announcement of his move to Marseille last August, he posted a video of Andy Dufresne from the film The Shawshank Redemption online.
The clip showed Dufresne celebrating his escape from prison, before ripping off his shirt as he screams in elation in the rain.
Since moving to Ligue 1, Maupay has scored four goals and provided as many assist in 16 league games.
