Newcastle started the brighter, with Anthony Gordon testing Caoimhín Kelleher inside the first 60 seconds before a Alexander Isak cross found no one in the six-yard box.
Arne Slot’s men then surged back into it and Alexis Mac Allister was just inches away when he slammed the post with a shot from the edge of the box.
Jacob Murphy then copied the Argentinian minutes later hitting the woodwork on the counter as the match swung back and forth.
The game had briefly died down but Isak blew it wide open with a thumping effort from range to catch Kelleher completely off-guard and send the Magpies a goal up.
A tame effort from Gordon and a fizzing strike from Murphy provided opportunities for a second but Newcastle could not take their opportunities to double their lead against a ragged Liverpool.
But the Reds came out after the break determined not to cede any ground to their title rivals and Curtis Jones delivered the goods with a goal from out of nowhere.
Mohamed Salah provided yet another reminder of his class with two goals and an assist
Newcastle started the brighter, as Alexander Isak rifled home from outside the area
Arne Slot was looking to extend his side’s fantastic run and lead at the top of the table
Mohamed Salah found the Englishman with a smart cross from the right-hand side and he lashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Liverpool were flying at this point and the Egyptian whipped in a ferocious ball across the box which Darwin Nunez somehow failed to get a touch on.
But the Magpies bounced back, this time with Isak turning provider. The centre-forward slipped Gordon through and the English star sharply turned Joe Gomez, leaving the centre-back on the turf, and slotted home.
Isak thought he had put the game beyond Liverpool moments later, cutting in from the right and blasting in a third, but the strike was ruled out for a clear offside.
And they were soon made to pay as Joelinton gave the ball away sloppily in his own half and when substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold found Salah darting into the area, the winger made no mistake to level things up.
The Egyptian, unfazed by his uncertain Anfield future, then gave another mesmerising reminder of his importance to the Reds with a clinical finish to put give them the lead for the first time.
Bur Newcastle provided a sting in the tail as Fabian Schar ghosted into the back post from a free-kick to slide the ball home after Kelleher completely misjudged the flight.
