Newcastle player’s future in doubt following loan move, hopes for permanent switch

A Newcastle player has revealed that he has been made aware that he has no future at the club.

Eddie Howe endured a difficult summer in the transfer window as the club failed to agree a deal following a long-running pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga was also considered on deadline day but the move ultimately would not be completed.

The frustration of the window was compounded by young talents such as Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson being sold to ensure the club was compliance with financial regulations.

One player that departed St James’ Park with less fanfare this summer was Jamal Lewis.

The 26-year-old has been surplus to requirements with the Magpies for sometime  and completed a shocking move to Brazilian club Sao Paulo earlier this month.

Speaking after the switch was completed Lewis admitted he believes his time at Newcastle is over.

‘I’ve spoken to the manager and I’m in my last year and I’ve done a season-long loan, so that kind of has the writing on the wall,’ he said.

‘But if Sao Paulo can be my long-term home for the future, that would be amazing.’

Lewis travelled to Brazil to complete the deal before flying back to Europe to join Michael O’Neil’s Northern Ireland to join them for their upcoming Nations League fixtures.

‘I got here at 7pm on Wednesday after a 15-hour journey, although my bags went missing,’ he added after returning to joining up with O’Neil’s squad.

‘I did a session with the training staff at around 8pm to get my legs moving a bit and here we are. Hopefully we’ll go to Bulgaria and get another win before I travel back to London, pack my bags properly and go back to Sao Paulo.

‘I’m looking forward to adapting and learning the language so I can gel with my team-mates, the staff and the fans. I want to enjoy this opportunity as much as possible.’

Lewis joined Newcastle in 2020 during Steve Bruce’s reign at the club, completing a switch worth upwards of £15m from boyhood club Norwich.

However, the full-back would quickly fall out of favour in the North East and spent last season on loan at Watford in the Championship.
