O’Hara calls for shock England substitution

Jamie O’Hara has called for Kieran Trippier to be taken off after just 17 minutes of England’s Euro 2024 tie with Slovenia.

The former Tottenham midfielder made his substitution demand following a late tackle from the England right-back.

Slovenia’s Zan Karnicnik just nipped in ahead of Trippier to win the ball and was caught by a flailing boot.

That led to the game’s first yellow card from referee Clement Turpin.

Jamie O’Hara told TalkSPORT ‘You’ve got to take him off, I don’t care that it’s been 17 minutes, he’s on a yellow already!’

But he was shutdown by fellow presenter Jason Cundy who replied: ‘ou can’t do that mate, he’s one of out most experienced players.

The Newcastle full-back is now walking a tight-rope for England as a second yellow could see him sent off.

There is also concern for later in the tournament as the yellow cards do not reset until after the quarter-final stage.

A suspension for Trippier could cause serious selection headaches for Gareth Southgate.

Luke Shaw is still unfit to play and there doesn’t appear to be a timeframe for his return.

Trippier has been the regular pick at left-back for England when Shaw isn’t available as was the case during Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

England are currently drawing 0-0 with Slovenia, a result that would be enough to see them finish top of Group C with Denmark being held by Serbia.

Bukayo Saka thought he had put the Three Lions ahead in the 20th minute when he tapped home a Phil Foden cross from close range.

However, the Manchester City midfielder was ruled offside in the build-up and the goal was chalked off.

England have failed to inspire again the first-half despite the decision by Gareth Southgate to bring Conor Gallagher into the starting line-up.
