Tom Brady cheers Birmingham on from SAFARI in Africa as his new team ties its first game of the new English soccer season

Tom Brady really is taking his involvement in Birmingham seriously as he appeared to cheer his new team on while on safari in Africa.

Birmingham played the first game of the new season in England’s championship – the second tier of English soccer – and started with a 1-1 tie at Welsh team Swansea.

Brady, who announced his investment on Thursday, his 46th birthday, is currently on vacation on Africa and earlier Saturday, shared video of himself with lions and tigers in the wild.

But a few hours later, attention was firmly on Birmingham. After sharing the team line-up on his Instagram story, he tweeted out ‘Way to finish!!!’ at Siriki Dembele, who scored on the stroke of halftime for Birmingham to take the lead.

Swansea spoiled the party in the end, with Jerry Yates equalizing the scores with a goal in the 76th minute.

Brady has been out on safari for the past few days and this week shared a picture of his daughter Vivienne. who is with him for his birthday week.

He posted video of lions and tigers resting by his jeep on Saturday morning and captioned it: ‘Excuse me, can you move a bit’.

In another, he said: ‘Think I’m a little too close for comfort’ as a lion walked nearby.

Earlier in the week, he shared a selfie with elephants in the background while he ate his lunch.

The seven-time Super Bowl winner admitted he has a lot to learn about the other football when his shock Birmingham announcement was made this week.

Brady said: ‘Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion and to be part of the Blues is a real honour for me.

‘BCFC is built on teamwork and determination and I’m excited to work alongside the board, management and players to make our Second City club second to none.

‘I’ve been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham.

‘But I do know a few things about winning. I think they may translate pretty well.

‘I know success starts with the work put in when the world isn’t watching. I know that a team is nothing without the city that shows up and stands behind it. Most importantly, I know I like being the underdog.’

Birmingham plays next on Tuesday in a cup game against Cheltenham.

Simon Thomas admits he will be ‘happy’ if he does ‘even half the job’ of Jeff Stelling over his 25 years on Soccer Saturday… as he replaces the legendary presenter in the hot seat for debut show

Sky Sports’ iconic results service, Soccer Saturday, is back underway for the new season with Simon Thomas at the helm.

The ex-Blue Peter presenter replaces Jeff Stelling after 25 years in the hot seat and humbly admitted he will be ‘happy if does even half the job’ that the legendary host did during his time on the show.

Introducing the programme for the first time in his new role, Thomas said: ‘Hi there, very good afternoon. In the blink of an eye the football season is back.

‘It’s like autumn out there, so it’s high time it returns. It’s a new season, we have new managers, new players and there’s a bit of a new feel as you might have already seen to Soccer Saturday.

‘We have a new studio, a new look, but hopefully everything you still love about this terrific show. Now, before we go any further I just want to say this, over the last couple of weeks, one or two people said “you’ve got some rather large boots to fill”.

‘I have not brought the boots today. I have brought my own shoes, a nice comfortable pair of size 10 leather brown shoes.

‘But I want to say this, it is an absolute honour to take on the role of hosting this quite brilliant show and if I can do even half the job that the legend Jeff Stelling did over the last 25 years, I will have done something right.’

The camera then panned out to reveal the new modern studio as Thomas introduced his panel for the opening show; Paul Merson, Clinton Morrison, Neil Lennon, Sue Smith and Michael Dawson.

Thomas’ appointment will no doubt be popular among colleagues and fans. The 50-was previously one of Sky’s main Premier League presenters before stepping away from the role following the tragic death of his wife six years ago.

He saw off stiff competition from other Sky presenters Caroline Barker and Jules Warren to secure the role and looks to be settling in nicely as the new host.

  • Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana blames himself after conceding from near the halfway line against Lens – and insists he’s ‘responsible’ for every goal the Red Devils let in

Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana blames himself after conceding from near the halfway line against Lens – and insists he’s ‘responsible’ for every goal the Red Devils let in

Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana was left embarrassed and says he ‘takes all the criticism’ after conceding early in his Old Trafford debut in a pre-season friendly against Lens.

The Manchester side had a shaky first-half performance, failing to make their return to Old Trafford far from impressive for home fans.

During his home debut, Onana was caught off his line by Lens’ Florian Sotoca who capitalised and lobbed the keeper from near the halfway line.

After the match, Onana said that he is ‘responsible for everything, especially the goals we concede’, as fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the incident.

Into the second half, United managed to regain control and went on to secure a victory against the Ligue 1 side in their penultimate pre-season match.

‘I am responsible for everything, especially the goals we concede. I am proud of what my defenders did.

‘I am the big man in the back so I take all the criticism

Erik Ten Hag’s side began the match against Ligue 1 side Lens with a star line-up with top scorer Marcus Rashford starting up front for the Reds, and Old Trafford debutant Mason Mount in midfield.

The second half saw goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Casemiro which secured the 3-1 victory for the Reds.

The new number seven faced criticism online after scuppering an early open-goal opportunity assisted by Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, with fans taking to X – formerly Twitter – to express their frustration.

Garnacho duly squared the ball to Mount inside the 6-yard box but the star signing was unable to connect with his strike, with the ball instead recoiling off his standing leg.

Following the catastrophic miss, United fans took to social media, to question Ten Hag’s desire to sign the 24-year-old who he first scouted after impressing him while on loan at Vitesse.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper will hope to fare better when the real action gets underway, with United starting their Premier League campaign at home to Wolves on August 14.

One fan wrote: ‘What I’ve learnt from MU pre-season: 1. We overpaid for Mount. Presses well, but the final third leaves a lot be desired. Not convinced on this signing, but will be happy to be proven wrong.’

Another questioned the United manager’s decision: ‘Why exactly did Ten Hag and Man United sign Mount?’

Before the match, Old Trafford welcomed their latest signing, Rasmus Hojlund – who signed to United for a £72m fee from Serie A side Atalanta.

Hojlund emerged through the ranks with Denmark and scored nine Serie A goals last season for Atalanta following a £15m move from Austrian club Sturm Graz.

Manchester United have faced Premier League rivals Arsenal in their pre-season friendlies, beating the London side 2-0 and a further 5-3 on penalties.

Erik Ten Hag’s side did not fare so well against European giants Dortmund and Real Madrid – both teams which they can expect to face in their Champions League campaign.

    • Aitana Bonmati opened the scoring and would go on to net a second goal

Aitana Bonmati scored twice as Spain routed Switzerland 5-1 on Saturday to reach the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup for the first time.

Spain responded emphatically to its 4-0 loss against Japan in their group-stage finale in a blowout against the Swiss in Auckland.

Alba Redondo, Laia Codina and Jennifer Hermoso also scored in the win at Eden Park. Codina showed plenty of relief to score from close range after conceding an own goal in the first half.

Spain coach Jorge Vilda made some big calls after his team was routed by Japan.

Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexis Putellas was left on the bench and goalkeeper Cata Coll was picked for her full international debut. They were among five changes to his starting lineup, which paid off as his team produced a dominant performance.

Switzerland was one of only three teams that didn’t concede a goal in the group stages, but were 4-1 down by halftime.

Bonmati scored her first in the fifth minute after Switzerland goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann had pushed Alba Redondo’s effort against the post. The Swiss couldn’t clear the ball and Bonmati collected it, turned sharply in the box and fired low into the corner.

Switzerland was gifted an equalizer in the 11th through Codina’s own goal. The defender picked up the ball just inside her own half, but without looking, turned and swept an overhit backpass beyond Coll, who was advanced out of her goal.

Spain was back in front in the 17th minute as Redondo headed a bouncing ball low into the corner. It was her third goal of the tournament.

Spain continued to look for more goals and Bonmati scored her second in the 36th when showing quick footwork to make space in the box before placing a shot into the corner.

It was 4-1 just before the break as Codina made amends for her earlier error by bundling the ball over the line from a corner.

Meriame Terchoun, one of three half time substitutes for Switzerland, forced a save from Coll from close range after the break. It was her team’s only effort on target all match.

Switzerland all-time leading scorer Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic had just one shot on goal in group play and didn’t fire a shot against Spain.

Hermoso swept in a fifth for Spain in the 70th to score her third of the tournament.

Wolfsburg Defender, Micky van de Ven, Set for Tottenham Hotspur Medical in London Over the Weekend Following £43 Million Transfer Deal; Signs Five-Year Contract

Micky van de Ven set to fly into London THIS weekend for Tottenham Hotspur medical after £43million transfer fee agreed… with Wolfsburg defender signing a five-year contract

    • Van de Ven is set to fly to London this weekend for his Tottenham medical
    • The Dutch defender will sign a five-year contract with Ange Postecoglou’s side
    • Wolfsburg and Tottenham have agreed on a £43million transfer fee

Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven is due to fly into London this weekend for a medical ahead of completing a £43million move to Tottenham and signing a five-year contract.

This comes after Mail Sport revealed that Ange Postecoglou’s side were on the verge of signing the defender after weeks of negotiations between the clubs.

The 22-year-old central defender enjoyed a successful season with Wolfsburg, leading to interest from several European clubs.

However, it is Spurs who have sealed a deal for the defender and he’s now set to fly to London this weekend for his medical.

The two sides agreed a £43million fee as the Netherlands U21 defender is set to sign a five-year deal.

Ange Postecoglou is closing in on the central defender as a £43million move is imminent

A potential deal was previously held up as Van de Ven was part of the Netherlands U21 squad to compete at the European Championships.

Unfortunately for his side, the young Dutchmen drew all three of their group matches and exited the tournament.

The defender was impressive, playing every minute as his side conceded just twice in the tournament.

The central defender also featured in Wolfsburg’s 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat to Italian side Spezia on Wednesday night.

Van de Ven will likely partner Cristian Romero at the heart of the Tottenham defence as Postecoglou gets his man a week before the Premier League season begins.

Tottenham face Brentford on the opening day, and Harry Kane’s future remains doubtful as Bayern Munich pursue a move for the England captain.

It remains to be seen as to where the forward will end up this summer, but Postecoglou will no doubt want the transfer saga sorted out sooner rather than later.

Five Championship Wonderkids to Keep an Eye on: Featuring a Wales International, a Promising Rolls Royce Defender, and a Former Tottenham Academy Star

A Wales international, a Rolls Royce defender and a former Tottenham academy star – five wonderkids to watch in the Championship this year

    • The Championship began this weekend with plenty of thrills and spills to come
    • A host of young players will be eager to light up the notoriously tough division
    • Mail Sport’s TOM COLLOMOSSE takes a look at five starlets to keep an eye on

The Championship returned with a bang as promotion hopefuls Southampton beat Sheffield Wednesday and plenty more thrills and spills await this season.

The likes of Leicester and the Saints will be among the firm favourites to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but the second tier is notoriously difficult.

However, a host of youngsters looked prime to take the division by storm.

Mail Sport’s TOM COLLOMOSSE has singled out five to keep a close eye on this campaign, including talented defenders and dynamic midfielders.

Here, we detail exactly why they are so highly rated.

Swansea's Ben Cabango is one of the Championship wonderkids set to light up the division

Swansea’s Ben Cabango is one of the Championship wonderkids set to light up the division

    Ben Cabango – 23, Swansea

The Welshman has had a good footballing education with the Swans, firstly under Steve Cooper and then Russell Martin. Cabango is a powerful centre back who is brave on the ball and is effective in both boxes.

His impressive form earned him a place in Wales’ World Cup squad last winter.

    Hayden Hackney – 21, Middlesbrough

Burst on to the scene under Michael Carrick and displays many of the same qualities which saw his boss enjoy a long and successful career as a midfielder.

Hackney is always willing to take the ball in tight areas and very rarely gives it away when he looks to play forward.

    Jacob Greaves – 22, Hull

A Rolls Royce of a player. Greaves has impressed at centre half since coming through the ranks at Hull, the club his father Mark played for, thanks in no small part to his wand of a left foot.

The form of others saw him shifted to left back at times last season but he looked equally adept in that role.

    Dennis Cirkin – 21, Sunderland

Took the brave decision of swapping the comfort of Tottenham’s academy for first-team football in the north east and is reaping the rewards.

Dublin-born Cirkin is a buccaneering left back who is a threat in the final third but is also exceptional in one-on-one situations.

    Billy Mitchell – 22, Millwall

Watch the energetic Mitchell in action and it is no surprise to learn that he comes from a family of Millwall fans.

The combative midfielder loves a tackle and has shone at the base of the Lions’ midfield under boss Gary Rowett. The 22-year-old has also shown an eye for a pass.

Old Trafford next, Rasmus? Man United’s £72m man Hojlund leaves a photo shoot in Manchester with girlfriend Laura Rhod Sondergaard, as the club prepare to unveil the striker

    • Manchester United will officially unveil striker Rasmus Hojlund this weekend
    • The club agreed a £72m deal with Atalanta and the ace has signed his contract
    • He was spotted leaving a photoshoot, seemingly via the back door, on Friday

Rasmus Hojland was spotted leaving a photoshoot the day before Manchester United plan to unveil him, having wrapped up a £72million move for the striker.

Desperate to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s frontline ahead of the new season, United agreed a bumper deal for Atalanta for the frontman, who promptly underwent his medical and put pen to paper on a five-year contract earlier this week.

Hojlund, 20, flew into Manchester on Tuesday afternoon after United settled on a fee and reported to the club’s Carrington training complex, though an announcement was seemingly delayed with his medical checks taking priority.

Now, though, the finishing touches on the high-profile switch, United’s third of the summer, appear to have been completed after the photo shoot was held.

Indeed, the ace was spotted leaving a building in the city, seemingly via the back door, before jumping into a blacked-out people carrier and being ferried away.

It is currently unclear who had organised the shoot but the step is likely to be the final obstacle before Hojlund’s grand announcement this weekend.

Hojlund was also accompanied by his girlfriend, Laura Rhod Sondergaard, who has often been spotted cheering on her partner in person at games.

As reported by Mail Sport, United plan to unveil the striker before their friendly with Ligue 1 side Lens on Saturday, with supporters anticipating the first sighting.

Denmark international Hojlund follows both Mason Mount and Andre Onana through the door at Old Trafford and is expected to be a regular starter next campaign.

Atalanta were reluctant to let go of their prized asset but United were keen to seal the deal and eventually reached an agreement including add-ons.

The move had almost been hijacked by Paris Saint-Germain at the death, despite the fact Hojlund had quickly become a priority target for United this summer.

Hojlund has inked a contract that will keep him tied down at United until at least 2028, while he also holds the option of extending the deal for a further year.

In preparation for his move, he missed out on Atalanta’s two pre-season fixtures, including a trip to the south coast to face Premier League outfit Bournemouth.

The highly-rated forward scored nine goals in Serie A last season and United moved quickly to secure him, having been convinced by his lofty potential.

Hojlund has been focused on pushing through the switch and is a self-confessed United supporter, having followed the team while growing up.

‘I think it’s gonna be a really nice experience to have the opportunity to go and play Real Sociedad matches outside Europe,’ Oyarzabal said.

‘We’re not used to it, I think it’s gonna be good and I think it’s good for La Real, the team, so that people can get to know us in different places.’

If American audiences aren’t so familiar with Sociedad, they’re certainly more acquainted with soccer in general.

The country has rallied behind the men’s and women’s national teams in the past year, Messi is quickly proving to be appointment viewing for Inter Miami and of course, the 2026 World Cup – to be co-hosted Stateside – is not far away.

Messi was still a PSG player when Oyarzabal spoke to Mail Sport, but the Spaniard made a now-prophetic prediction back in the spring.

‘They’re just starting out in football and I think a few years ago it didn’t have as much impact as it does today,’  he said of the USA’s soccer culture.

‘But I think there are more players that are going to play in the United States.’

That list now includes Oyarzabal – if only for one night.

Sociedad plays Betis at 7pm ET (4pm local time) before Sevilla and Atletico Madrid kick off at 10pm.

Chelsea complete £40m signing of defender Axel Disasi from Monaco on a six-year contract

Chelsea have completed the signing of defender Axel Disasi from Monaco for £40million.

Disasi has joined Chelsea on a six-year contract, with the Blues seeing off competition from Manchester United and Newcastle.

Disasi stated that he is eager to ‘win big things’ at Chelsea. He told the club’s official website: ‘It’s something I’ve been waiting for.

‘I am so happy to be here, at this big club. I am really proud to be able to be a part of this great family, and I hope to achieve very big things here. To win titles. I will do everything I can to achieve those objectives. I am very ambitious.’

The 25-year-old also spoke about his excitement at playing in front of the Chelsea fans.

He said: ‘I can’t wait to feel the energy of the fans.

‘This is a very good stadium, one where you have a beautiful proximity to the fans. A typical English stadium, I think.

‘The fervour of the fans in the Premier League, the atmosphere, the intensity of the games: it is something that excites me.’

Eddie Howe Utilizes Erik ten Hag’s ‘Annoying’ Remark in Amazon Doc as Motivation; Inspires Players with Passionate Speech Before Memorable Win over Man United at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe turned Erik ten Hag’s disparaging words about his Newcastle United side into pure motivation before one of their best performances of last season.

The Manchester United boss had described Howe’s team as ‘annoying’ ahead of their meeting in the Carabao Cup final in February, suggesting they deliberately slowed down the pace of games.

While Ten Hag saw his side win 2-0 at Wembley to lift that trophy, it was a very different story when the two teams met at St James’ Park in the Premier League in April.

Howe’s team blew Man United off the park that afternoon, as goals by Joe Willock and Callum Wilson secured a memorable victory.

And the new behind-the-scenes Amazon documentary, ‘We Are Newcastle United’, has revealed that Howe read out Ten Hag’s unflattering comments to fire up his players in the dressing room beforehand.

A teaser clip from the documentary shows Howe’s final speech before the players walked out.

He says: ‘My final message today, I’m going to do something that I rarely do but I felt upon hearing the comments, I needed to relay it to you.

‘So comments from their manager [Ten Hag]: ‘They have the lowest ball in play time in the league and are quite successful at slowing the game down.

‘It’s an annoying team to play against so we have to find a way to play against them. So it’s up to us that we get the speed in the game, and we are also dependent on the refereeing as well.’

‘Why am I telling you that? If they want a quick game, coming here, let’s f***ing give it to them, let’s be intense in every action that we do, let’s make it a quick game. Let’s go!’

The three points gained that day helped Newcastle finish fourth in the final league standings and qualify for the Champions League for the first time in two decades.

Willock headed home the opener on 65 minutes after Allan Saint-Maximin had nodded a cross by Bruno Guimaraes back across goal.

Wilson came off the bench late on and made sure of the win by nodding home Kieran Trippier’s free-kick.

Newcastle’s social media team also couldn’t resists a couple of pops at Ten Hag, tweeting ‘no time-wasting required’ and commenting that Saint-Maximin was ‘annoying’ to play against.

Ten Hag made his comments ahead of the Carabao Cup final based on the goalless league draw between the two sides at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta also expressed frustrations over Newcastle’s approach at other points last season.

At the time of Ten Hag’s remarks, the ball had only been in play for an average of 51 minutes and 47 seconds of Newcastle’s matches – the lowest of any top-flight club aside from Leeds.

Ten Hag said: ‘They’re an annoying team to play against, so we have to find a way to win. They try to annoy you. We have to make sure we play our game and we focus on our game.

‘If you see the referee wants to play an effective time, they have the lowest in the league and they are quite successful with it.

‘So it’s up to us that we get speed in the game, and we are also then dependent on the refereeing as well.

‘We have to make it our game, so focus on the job and playing football when the ball is in the game, it’s about that.

‘So fully concentrated on that. Don’t get distracted from what can be, whatever is on the pitch. We have to find our way and find out the moments we can strike.’

Ten Hag got his wish that afternoon as goals by Casemiro and Marcus Rashford ended a six-year trophy wait for United.

But those words certainly came back to haunt him a few weeks later after Howe weaponised them to excellent effect.

Sam Kerr’s Fitness Update: Photo Uncovers Progress in Striker’s Denmark Game Preparation, Unearthing Crucial Detail in Training Regimen

Photo reveals where Sam Kerr is at in her battle to be fit for Denmark game as important detail about superstar striker’s training regime comes to light

    • Matildas play Denmark in knockout match on Monday
    • Players are preparing in Queensland for the clash
    • Confident they can get the job done with or without Kerr

Sam Kerr spent Friday’s training session on an exercise bike wearing sneakers instead of football boots, but Matildas officials insist it is part and parcel of her preparation to get back onto the pitch against Denmark.

And in a boost for the Matildas, defender Charlotte Grant has been cleared to play on Monday night despite suffering delayed concussion.

Kerr missed all three group matches for Australia, although officials named her on the bench for the final do-or-die clash against Canada and were ready to deploy her if desperate.

Australia’s thumping 4-0 win over Canada meant Kerr was not required and gave the Matildas skipper an extra six days to get her troublesome calf right for Denmark.

Previously Kerr has been limited to walking laps of the training pitch because of her injury.

There were encouraging signs at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre on Thursday, though, when Kerr was seen doing ball work with teammates.

The fact she was back on an exercise bike on Friday may look like a setback, but Matildas officials told reporters it was ‘all part of the plan’ and goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold confirmed it was part of Kerr’s specialised program.

‘She has her own individual plan that she’s doing with the doctor and physio, getting her ready to join in with the team,’ Arnold said.

‘What she had to do, she looked like she was quite comfortable doing it, and she was in high spirits after the [session]. So I assumed it all went well.’

Even if Kerr is available for the Denmark clash on Monday, it is unlikely she will be able to play out the entire match because of her injury.

Her exact role will be kept under wraps for as long as possible, but Arnold said the rest of the squad had proved they have the firepower to blow Denmark off the pitch with or without their star forward.

‘The world has now seen what we can do,’ Arnold said.

‘We always want Sam on the field and she’s a world-class striker, but we’ve shown now that we have the depth and we can play any combination up front that we can still score goals.

‘If she plays, she plays, if she doesn’t, she doesn’t. But we have our plan.’

Matildas defender Clare Polkinghorne added: ‘She’s been superb through it all.

‘She always puts the team before herself, so right from the beginning, she’s been our biggest supporter and always helping out where she can.

‘While she hasn’t been able to help on the field yet, she’s definitely still a massive part of this team and it has definitely helped us get to where we are.

‘We’re really looking forward to having her back.’

While firepower might not be a problem, Australia will need to be on alert in defence against a potent Denmark forward line including Paris Saint-Germain’s Amalie Vangsgaard and Bayern Munich star Pernille Harder.

Fortunately, Grant will be fit to play after concussion protocols ruled her out of Matildas training until Friday.

Meet Tom Brady: The Billion Dollar Man Who Supports Trump, Embodies American Sporting Heroism, and is Now a Proud Owner of Birmingham City

Tom Brady might have walked straight out of central casting to be the all-American sporting hero. Standing 6ft 4in tall, Hollywood handsome and once married to a supermodel, he became the most-decorated NFL success story in history.

The fame of the man who has improbably bought into Birmingham City extended beyond even the USA’s vast expanses to enter the imagination of the wider world.

He has been feted globally for his achievements and longevity: an unprecedented seven Super Bowl triumphs, with his strong right arm carrying his career not only to a record passing yards — 89,214 — but to 45, the years-defying retirement age he typically set for himself and even more typically met, after one false retirement that was soon retracted.

American sport is quantified by statistics, so only half an apology for recalling that his other unsurpassed figures included 649 passing touchdowns and 7,753 pass completions. In his forties he even beat the numbers he set in his twenties, with the help of a reconstructed knee.

While we may quibble over whether LeBron James or Michael Jordan was the supreme being in basketball, who can say other than Brady is gridiron’s GOAT — the Greatest Of All Time?

Brady – pictured alongside fellow sporting legends Lewis Hamilton, Michael Jordan and David Beckham (L-R) – is considered royalty by many after his overwhelming success in the NFL

In quantities easier for a British audience to understand, Brady earned some $1billion in wages and endorsements across 23 years, 20 of those reaching dizzying pinnacles with the New England Patriots prior to his retirement at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he spent an Indian summer, conquering the Super Bowl for one last time in 2021.

He could have earned even more riches had he not, for a number of years, accepted a discount from the Patriots so they could invest in the rest of the team and remain within the salary cap.

It is a sign of him being the ultimate competitor and winner and put him — as some would send up — close to sainthood.

It all began without much razzmatazz, though. Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jnr, born San Mateo, California, one of four children and the only son, a graduate of the University of Michigan, was selected as a distant 199th afterthought by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft, the biggest heist imaginable.

After that came 17 divisional titles, 11 of them consecutive, nine Super Bowl appearances and six titles with New England. In all, he has been named Most Valuable Player three times.

It was both their good fortunes that Brady was in concert with coach Bill Belichick, American Football’s answer to Sir Alex Ferguson, though it should be recorded that the Patriots have done nothing of note without their star quarterback to this day.

There was a dash of grit in the heady mix. Brady was disciplined for ordering the deflation of balls in the Patriots’ victory over the Indianapolis Colts in 2015 and was suspended for four games. His team were fined $1m and forfeited two draft selections.

Brady, who wore Make America Great Again caps in support of Donald Trump, completed his fairy-tale romance with Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen in a Catholic ceremony at Santa Monica in 2009.

In up-to-the-minute vernacular, Ken had met his Barbie. They had two children, Benjamin, 13, and Vivian, 10. The pair’s divorce was finalised in October last year. One theory behind the split was his reluctance to retire, an unwillingness to put family before his calling in sport.

Brady (left) and Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen (right) announced their divorce on October 2022 after 13 years of marriage

Yet Bundchen told Vanity Fair: ‘What’s been said is one piece of a much bigger puzzle. It’s not so black and white.

‘I have always cheered for him and will continue for ever. If there’s one person I want to be the happiest in the world, it’s him, believe me. I want all his dreams to come true.’

His longevity was sustained by his diet, or so we are led to believe. It is called the TB12 Method, a largely plant-based regimen. Devised with alternative medicine practitioner Alex Guererro, it incorporates, ‘a series of healthy daily habits across five pillars — pliability, nutrition, hydration, movement and mental fitness’.

It is intended to reduce inflammation, provide energy, improve performance and aid recovery.

Organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and legumes make up about 80 per cent of the fare. Grass-fed, organic meat and hormone and antibiotic-free poultry make up the remaining 20 per cent, along with wild-caught fish and seafood. Tomatoes are eschewed.

What they would have made of that at Trevor Francis’s Birmingham City is anyone’s guess, but that is modern sports science at its cutting edge.

These days, post-retirement, Brady is held up as an emblem of what looking after yourself can do to a sportsman. His name is cited when it is asked if his friend Lewis Hamilton can go on beyond the age of 38. ‘Look at Tom Brady, still at it at 45,’ said Mercedes boss Toto Wolff when the question came up. ‘Age is no barrier.’

By buying into a second-tier football club, Brady is no doubt seeking some sort of dividend. On this side of the Pond, few have managed financial glories for long post-career, value being apt to die when one’s playing days are over.

Sir Jackie Stewart is probably the best example of someone who has made it work, with his links to Ford, Rolex and Heineken, and as a team owner of his eponymous, Grand Prix-winning outfit, sold for a goldmine.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Arnold Palmer made a success of a stratospherically bank-busting retirement and endless appeal.

Tom Brady, superstar, may hope he is of the same ilk.

Footage of the NFL’s greatest quarterback posing for pictures in a Birmingham jersey surfaced on social media on Thursday, hours after his shock investment was announced.

And at the end of the clip, which appears to be staged, Brady puts a soccer ball down that he had been holding and kicks it at the person filming him. They then fall over and appear to drop their camera.

Brady, who also turned 46 on Thursday, shocked the world of sport with his announcement of a foray into English soccer.

‘So here’s the deal, I’m officially coming on board at Birmingham City Football Club,’ Brady said in a social media video.

‘But I do know a few things about winning, and I think they may translate pretty well’.

Last year, Birmingham finished 17th out of 24 teams in the Championship, the second tier of English soccer.

The Birmingham coach John Eustace has said success at the team will be a process.

Speaking Wednesday, he said: ‘The club has been taken over by some very passionate and powerful people and they care deeply. They want to grow this club and make it a force.

‘That’s going to be done over time, it’s not over a short period. It’s done over two, three, four or five years. Eventually it’ll be up there.’

Germany captain Alexandra Popp has been left stunned by the country’s shocking exit at the group stage of the Women’s World Cup following a 1-1 draw with South Korea on Thursday.

The world No 2 ranked side, who made the final of the Euros last year, lost their second group game against Colombia, but were still in a strong position to qualify heading into the match after beating Morocco 6-0 in their opening group fixture.

However, they fell behind early on when Cho So-hyun scored in the sixth minute.

Popp equalised for Germany with a powerful header just before half time, but the European giants couldn’t find a winner after the break, despite the game running for an incredible 107 minutes.
