Pep Guardiola mocked by 'homophobic' chants from Real Madrid supporters during Man City's defeat after his shock split from his wife

Pep Guardiola was reportedly mocked by homophobic chants from Real Madrid supporters during Manchester City’s Champions League defeat last night.

City crashed out in the knockout play-off round after Kylian Mbappe put them to the sword in a 3-1 defeat at the Bernabeu, condemning them to a 6-3 aggregate loss.

A first-half brace from Mbappe all but dumped Guardiola’s heavyweights out but there was still time for the forward to complete his hat-trick after the interval with a stunning finish. Nico Gonzalez scored a consolation goal deep into stoppage time.

The home crowd revelled in an unforgettable night for the club and took the opportunity to rub it in the face of Guardiola, a Barcelona legend after he won a host of trophies there, including three LaLiga titles and two Champions Leagues.

According to Marca, with the scoreline at 2-0, Madrid supporters aimed their first unseemly message at the Catalan coach, chanting: ‘Oh, Guardiola, you look so thin. First it was the drugs. Today you can see it in Chueca.’

Chueca is a district in Madrid, known as the heart of gay culture in the city, but the word could also have a double meaning, as it can be slang for describing someone as ‘crooked’. Marca have alleged the ‘reprehensible’ chant had homophobic undertones.

Guardiola recently split from his wife Cristina Serra after a 30-year relationship

The chant comes in the wake of Guardiola’s shock split from his wife, Cristina Serra, after a 30-year relationship. Lorena Vasquez and fellow journalist Laura Fa, a duo of well-respected showbiz reporters called the Mamarazzis, broke the story last month.

Days later, they claimed in a podcast appearance that Serra, a fashion entrepreneur, decided ‘enough was enough’ after Guardiola U-turned on a decision to move away from the UK and put pen to paper on a new contract running until 2027.

Guardiola, 53, tied the knot with Serra in an intimate ceremony on the outskirts of Barcelona in 2014. They had been living apart for more than five years after she moved back to Barcelona with one of their three daughters, Valentina, 17.

They share two other children together: Maria, 24, and Marius, 22.

After Mbappe scored his third of the night, the chants then took on an ironic tone.

‘Guardiola, stay,’ was the message from the crowd on three separate occasions.

There are no suggestions that Guardiola heard the chants directed toward him and after the final whistle, he shook hands with Carlo Ancelotti before congratulating Madrid’s players and acknowledging the 2000-strong travelling contingent.

‘Nothing is eternal,’ Guardiola said post-match. ‘We have been unbelievable and we have to try step by step to get better from today.

‘We have been extraordinarily extraordinary in the past, but not any more.

‘We have 13 games [left in the Premier League] and have to be top four or five to try to be [in the Champions League] again.’

Guardiola then added: ‘We couldn’t defend well with the movement from Mbappe and it was more difficult. The best team won, they deserved it. They were better.

‘What we have to do is accept the reality and move forward.’
