Ralf Rangnick in talks with Bayern Munich to replace Thomas Tuchel, while preparing to lead Austria at Euro 2024

Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that he has been ‘in contact with Bayern Munich’ over a move to take over at the German club when Thomas Tuchel departs this summer.

The 65-year-old is set to manage Austria this summer at Euro 2024 and while he admitted that he will remain ‘focused completely’ on the international side, it appears the German coach is in the running to take over at the Bavarian club.

Bayern announced earlier this season that their current boss, Tuchel, would be leaving the club, amid an indifferent season that has seen the Bavarian outfit miss out on winning the Bundesliga for the first time in 11 years.

Rangnick has been working on the international scene since he left Manchester United after a dismal five-month tenure at Old Trafford. But the German coach has now revealed that there is a chance he could return to managing at club-level.

‘There has been contact from the side of Bayern Munich and I have informed the Austrian Football Association,’ the former United caretaker manager told Austrian outlet 90 Minuten.

‘I feel very well here. At the moment there is no reason to intensively deal with this.’

The German coach added that he would have to discuss any potential move with the Austrian FA first.

‘If Bayern say ‘we want you’. And then I would also have to ask myself ‘do I really want this?’. If I want to do something else I will first discuss it with the Austrian FA,’ Rangnick said.

Bayern are one of several clubs, including Liverpool, who are currently on the hunt for a new manager.

The 32-time Bundesliga champions have have reportedly had several names on their managerial shortlist, including Unai Emery, Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann – who have all seemingly rejected the chance to move to the club.

Tuchel had agreed a two-year deal to manage Bayern in 2023, but that deal has been cut short by the club, with his side having won 21, drawn three and lost six games in the Bundesliga this season.

Rangnick, meanwhile, endured a dismal tenure in charge at Man United, winning 10 games, drawing seven, while losing seven matches. While Erik ten Hag was working to lay the foundations at United, Rangnick was seen as a stop-gap by some United players, with United similarly abandoning a two-year plan to keep him on at the club.

Interestingly the German had not actually managed a team prior to joining Man United, since he worked as RB Leipzig boss betweeen 2018 and 2019.
