Record-breaking duo: Stones and Pickford make 23rd major tournament starts

John Stones and Jordan Pickford were selected to start against Slovakia on Sunday and the made a piece of history in doing so.

It marked a 23rd major tournament start for both men, surpassing a record set by one former England star.

That man was Ashley Cole, who was named in the starting XI 22 consecutive times for the Three Lions in tournaments.

Pickford and Stones matched that when they they were picked to play in England’s third group game against Slovenia on Tuesday.

And they have now passed with their involvement in Sunday’s last-16 showdown with Slovakia.

Cole was an England international from 2001 to 2014, playing at three World Cups and two Euros.

He was voted England Player of the Year in 2010 and retired as his country’s most-capped full-back with 107 caps.

Pickford has been England’s undisputed No 1 since 2018 and has 64 caps to his name.

Stones made his debut 10 years ago and has played 75 matches for his country.
