Revealed: Why Bayern Munich are BANNED from wearing iconic red home kit in the Champions League ahead of Celtic clash

Harry Kane and Bayern Munich have been banned from wearing their home kit in the Champions League campaign and the reasons behind this have now been revealed.

The Bavarian giants are closing in on yet another Bundesliga title – after missing out last year – and are progressing well in their European campaign.

Although they missed out on automatic qualification, the German side remain in the competition and will face Celtic in a round of 32 clash on Wednesday night.

Despite their being no obvious kit clash between their respective home kits – Celtic playing in green and white, Bayern in red and black – the visitors will be in their away strip.

This is because UEFA have imposed a ban on Vincent Kompany’s side from playing in the competition in their home strip due to the dark numbers on the jersey, which they claim do not offer enough contrast for viewers.

The governing body have since said that Bayern will be allowed to participate in the kit, as long as they make some slight modifications to it.

Specifically, changing the numbers and names to a white font would allow for Bayern to wear the kit as the tournament progresses.

Bayern will have their work cut out from them on the night unbeaten in 16 games at home this campaign, including four in the Champions League.

Ahead of the tie, Brendan Rodgers fears his pleas for Celtic fans to ‘follow the rules’ may fall on deaf ears — even after they escaped a UEFA ban from attending the Champions League play-off away leg against Bayern later this month.

UEFA fined Celtic £8,340 for the lighting of fireworks and throwing of objects by a supporter at Villa Park, but the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body decided against implementing a suspended ban on away fans.

The punishment is still hanging over Celtic after a series of fines led to the ban — which was suspended for two years — in the wake of major pyro displays by fans in Dortmund last September.

However, the club successfully argued their case that it should not be triggered for the second leg of the play-off against Bayern on February 18, after one fan threw a green smoke canister on to the pitch during the 4-2 defeat by Aston Villa on January 29.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane has broken his silence on his Bayern Munich future after it was revealed that he has a release clause in his contract that could pave the way for his return to the Premier League.

Included in the England captain’s £120million move to the Bundesliga club from Tottenham was a buy-out stipulation in his contract that he can activate.

Indications in Germany claim that the clause could have been activated during the most recent winter transfer window for a fee of £67m, with the price set to drop to £54m next January.

The reasons behind Bayern Munich’s home kit ban in the Champions League have been revealed.
