Rio Ferdinand slammed Manchester United following their poor first half performance at Everton – before performing a U-turn after they earned a draw.

The Red Devils headed into the break 2-0 down at Goodison Park to continue their slump under Ruben Amorim.

Everton took the lead inside 19 minutes through the inform Beto’s close-range finish before Abdoulaye Doucoure’s header shortly

And Ferdinand didn’t hold back in his assessment of his former club, who failed to register a shot on target in the first half.

Speaking on TNT Sports he said: ‘I don’t know if I’ve seen a United team this bad. It’s been embarrassing in all facets of the game.

‘Yes we can talk about quality but I think one thing that’s unforgivable is a lack of fight, a lack of desire, not getting near people.

‘There’s been instants in this game, especially the second half, where Man United need to look at Everton and take examples. The ability to track back to run in transitions and fight for balls. Embarrassing to sit here and watch.’

United halved the deficit through Bruno Fernandes’ free kick after 72 minutes before Manuel Ugarte earned the visitors a point eight minutes later.

Ferdinand then performed a U-turn, though he insists United must still improve.

He said: ‘Goals change games. They cannot continue like this, they have got to start games like they mean it.

‘The substitutions were big. Alejandro Garnacho changed things, Bruno Fernandes dropping deep, but there’s so many things to pick this performance apart.

‘They were positive at the end and that’s where you’ve got to look.’
