Rival Fans Mock Trent Alexander-Arnold for Comments About Arsenal’s ‘Mentality’ and ‘Means More’ Dig at Man City After Liverpool’s Defeat by Everton

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been mocked by rival fans on the back of Liverpool’s defeat by Everton.

The defender played 84 minutes at Goodison Park on Wednesday night before being withdrawn for Joe Gomez, much to the amusement of the home crowd in Merseyside.

The 2-0 loss puts the Reds four points adrift of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with four games to go, with the hopes of winning the title in Jurgen Klopp’s final game all but gone.

It’s been a rough few weeks for Liverpool, who have dropped a number of points as a season that had promised so much collapsed around them and their players.

Alexander-Arnold had spoken on mentality a few weeks ago, seeming to suggest that Arsenal’s mentality cost them points in the race. Now, on the back of Liverpool’s latest loss, his comments have been raised by rival supporters.

‘If those fixtures were reversed and we played second and Arsenal played first, maybe it would’ve been a different mentality,’ the Reds vice-captain told Sky Sports after Liverpool lost to Crystal Palace and Arsenal Aston Villa. ‘It all comes down to mentality. I think our result played a part in Arsenal’s result.

‘They have potentially got too excited and thought, “This is our chance, this is what we need to do”. Maybe they overthought things whereas if us and City both won it made them think, “We just need to win” rather than it being a chance to break away from the pack. None of us have been in a three-horse race, so it’s difficult.’

‘His problem is he talks a lot and too early’ one fan posted on X, formerly Twitter, while another wrote: ‘He left his mentality at home I guess.’

A third posted, accompanied by a photo of Alexander-Arnold on the bench on Wednesday after being substituted off: ‘How’s your mentality treating you tonight, son?’

The 25-year-old also commented on Manchester City after Liverpool won the Carabao Cup in February, and his words came under intense criticism again from rival supporters.

‘Our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially,’ Alexander-Arnold wrote. ‘How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we’ve done it, probably means more to our fans.’

Liverpool had been hunting a Quadruple of sorts this season, with hopes of lifting the FA Cup, Premier League and Europa League alongside the Carabao Cup giving Klopp the send-off Reds fans had wanted.

Out of the FA Cup and Europa League, however, their title hopes are hanging by a thread, and Liverpool have only won five out of the 10 games they have played since the defender’s comments.

City, meanwhile, are in the FA Cup final and are favourites to win the league for a record fourth year in a row. They were knocked out of the Champions League on penalties against Real Madrid last week.
