Roy Keane criticizes Manchester United for squandering three-goal lead in shootout victory against Coventry in FA Cup semi-final and points out one player for lacking ‘courage’

Roy Keane has disagreed with Harry Maguire’s comments after Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry and insisted the Red Devils ‘rode their luck’ to make it past the Championship outfit. 

The former United captain ripped into Erik ten Hag’s side after seeing them give up a 3-0 lead in a thrilling encounter at Wembley. 

Though, United eventually progressed to the final after a shootout victory, Keane believes the side is absent of leaders and bemoaned the ‘same conversations’ that are had about the team’s failings. 

‘Some of the United players and supporters weren’t going over the top with the celebrations.’ He said on ITV. ‘They were almost embarrassed to win at the end. 

‘Whenever I see this United team I don’t like what I see. Talk about leadership and characters, I don’t see that in this United team. My goodness, they rode their luck today. 

‘We’re having the same conversation every week with Man United, you don’t know what you’re going to get. 

‘You always say you need a bit of luck. Maguire said they showed good character, I don’t see character in this group of players. I’m looking at the goalkeeper, wasting time. Just get on with the game. Show some courage. 

‘Huge problems for Man United going forward but they got the job done.’

The Premier League looked in complete control for much of the game, having taken an early lead through Scott McTominay, which they doubled with Harry Maguire’s header in first-half stoppage time. 

Bruno Fernandes then gave them what looked to be an unassailable 3-0 advantage with a deflected shot just before the hour mark but Mark Robins’ team soon roared back. 

First Ellis Simms scored his fifth goal in as many FA Cup games in the 71st minute before Callum O’Hare’s wayward shot deflected and looped over Andre Onana and into the United goal. 

Coventry completed their comeback in the 95th minute when Haji Wright calmly converted a spot-kick which had been awarded for a handball on Aaron Wan-Bissaka. 

In extra-time both teams hit the woodwork prior to Victor Torps last-minute strike from close range which looked to have won it for the second-tier outfit but their joys were short-lived as the goal was ruled out for an offside in the build-up.
