Ruben Amorim admitted that his Manchester United players were ‘confused’ and ‘afraid’ as the clung on to a draw at Ipswich.

United flew out the blocks and were ahead after 81 seconds through Marcus Rashford but they soon lost their way as they got to grips with Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

‘If you see the first half, you can see that they are a little bit afraid,’ the United boss said.

‘When we don’t have training and it’s hard to say all the reactions to the players, we had two days so they are confused a little bit.’

Amorim added that he felt players were ‘thinking too much’ as he tried to rid them of bad habits picked up under predecessor Erik ten Hag.

Ipswich felt aggrieved they didn’t win the game and Amorim said that decision-making from his players, not his system, was to blame.

‘Decision-making is a concern,’ he added. ‘You don’t need to coach them in this level. We are doing some things not in the right moment and that’s what we have to address.

‘The 3-4-3 is not the concern, the understanding of the game is what we have to improve.

‘It’s a tough league. You learn that in the first moment. My players were thinking too much in the game you can feel it. Not just on the ball but where they are supposed to be. And that is hard. It’s just two days with the team so it’s really hard.’
