Ruben Amorim has insisted that his future is on the line as much as his Manchester United players’ if results do not improve, as the manager waved away speculation over Manchester United’s January transfer window activity on Wednesday night.
United are under pressure to sell players to comply with profit and sustainability rules, and raise funds for the new head coach to strengthen his squad, amid an unimpressive start to their season.
The club posted losses worth £7million for their first financial quarter last month, as the toll of not qualifying for the Champions League this season begins to pinch.
While Man United remain on course for healthy annual revenues of between £650 to £670m, the club have seen figures down in commercial, broadcasting and matchday income.
Under new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos group, United has embarked on a raft of ruthless cost-cutting measures, but abstemious spending and even player sales could yet be needed to ensure that the side complies with Premier League PSR regulations.
Asked on Wednesday night if he needs to sell to buy in January, Amorim brought the focus back to recent results, saying: ‘I really don’t know, there’s a lot at stake at this moment.

‘Every detail counts; we have to be very clear in the profiles and then go to that phase of buying and selling players.
‘If we don’t win, the coach goes and the player goes. There’s a lot to do, so let’s focus on improving our players.’
Mail Sport reported on Wednesday that academy graduate Marcus Rashford could even find himself up for sale, with the club putting a £40m price tag on their player.
Rashford has been at the club since he was a boy, and despite going through a tricky period of uneven form, has garnered over 425 appearances since breaking into the first team.

Amorim was speaking from Czechia, ahead of a Europa League meeting with Viktoria Plzen.
After a lacklustre campaign in Europe thus far, United are in dire need of a win to avoid enduring a play-off stage en route to potential knockout football.
‘For us, it’s massive,’ he said of meeting Plzen on Thursday evening. ‘We’re facing a team a lot of people don’t know, but they’re unbeaten at home in Europe.
‘It’s really important to go to the next stage, and we need to win tomorrow because of all of that. If you pass to the next stage without a play-off, we take (away) two games.’
