England Women kickstarted their Nations League campaign with a 2-1 win over Scotland in front of 41,000 spectators at the Stadium of Light.
In the end, it required two headed contributions in the first half to seal the three points – first a spectacular diving effort from Lucy Bronze after 39 minutes, next a Lauren Hemp bullet header six minutes later.
Kirsty Hanson halved the deficit with the final touch of the opening period but England saw out a quieter spell after the break in their first action since the World Cup.
It was a good performance from Sarina Wiegman’s side and it could have been three goals were Rachel Daly’s header not ruled out for offside after 25 minutes, with Chloe Kelly judged to have obstructed goalkeeper Lee Helen Gibson.
