Switzerland’s Vargas scores stunning goal vs Italy

Switzerland’s Ruben Vargas scored an excellent goal just 27 seconds into the second half as he made it 2-0 against Italy.

Italy kicked off at the start of the second period but they eventually lost possession, with Switzerland proceeding to work the ball to Vargas, who found the net with a composed finish from just inside the penalty area.

Switzerland had taken the lead in the 37th minute through Remo Freuler and went on to win the game to progress to the quarter-finals.

Fans were quick to criticise Italy for the ‘worst kick-off routine of all time.’

One fan wrote on X: ‘When kick off routines go wrong’.

There was further criticism of Italy, with one user writing: ‘So Italy try an elaborate kick off routine, lose the ball and concede within 30 seconds of the start of the second half. Talk about an unimpressive start’.

Another user claimed that England, who could potentially face Switzerland in the last-16, should be concerned about the threat posed by Murat Yakin’s team.

They wrote: ‘I said from the get go that the Italians wouldn’t do as well this year, and that Swiss would beat them. Any England fans that think this is good news are deluded, Switzerland look far more dangerous.’
