David de Gea has shown a willingness to enter into talks with Genoa, according to Italian media.

The Spanish shot-stopper, amazingly, remains without a club more than a year on from his Manchester United exit. De Gea was cut loose in the summer of 2023 after failing to come to grips with Erik ten Hag’s style of play.

While Man Utd went and signed Andre Onana for a whopping €50.2 million, De Gea spent time away from football, though he perhaps didn’t anticipate being without a club for more than 12 months.

Despite interest from many corners of the globe, the 33-year-old rejected all offers last year and so far the situation surrounding him has been mostly quiet this summer.

De Gea recently made a cryptic social media post, simply sharing an hourglass emoji on X, but the big transfer headlines have been found wanting, though he does reportedly have interest from Saudi Arabia and MLS.

De Gea set for Serie A?

However, the shot-stopper could also soon be playing his football in Italy. According to Di Marzio, Genoa have made contact with the Spaniard and De Gea has “opened up” to the project.

It is asserted that the veteran has “given an opening” to the Serie A side to discuss terms with his representatives, with Genoa in the market for a replacement for Josep Martinez, who has joined Inter.

The club, however, have not fully decided yet who their next goalkeeper should be. Coach Alberto Gilardino recently stated that he wants someone who is comfortable with the ball at his feet, which is an aspect of the game De Gea struggled with at Man Utd.

Nevertheless, it is an intriguing prospect. In Italy, De Gea could link up with former Red Devils teammate Raphael Varane, who is on the verge of joining Cesc Fabregas’ promoted Como. Former Spain teammate Pepe Reina and compatriot Alberto Moreno have also signed for the Serie A new boys.
