How Italy will line up at Euro 2024

Gianluigi Donnarumma won the Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament award following his heroics in between the sticks and while his stock has fallen at Paris Saint-Germain, he remains Italy’s undisputed number one.

Spalletti is likely to deploy a 3-4-2-1 system at the tournament and he will draw on Inter Milan’s success in 2023-24 by using the Nerazzurri’s back three of Matteo Darmian, Francesco Acerbi and Alessandro Bastoni.

Fellow Inter star Federico Dimarco will be used at left-wing-back, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Destiny Udogie missing through injury, while Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo will play on the opposite flank.

Nicolo Barella is Italy’s star man and he will be key to their success in the middle of the park. Arsenal veteran Jorginho is expected to partner Barella, although Manuel Locatelli could also get the nod.

In attack, Spalletti will use Federico Chiesa and Lorenzo Pellegrini as attacking central midfielders who can move wide, while the in-form Gianluca Scamacca is likely to lead the line. He has been extremely prolific since leaving West Ham United to join Atalanta.
