Manchester City had a busy January transfer window that saw them spend more than €200 million on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Nico Gonzalez and Vitor Reis.

All four have made a positive impact at the Etihad Stadium, with Marmoush netting his first career hat-trick against Newcastle on Saturday after he cost the club €70 million.

It was a breakthrough display from the Egypt international, who had endured four games without a goal since arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt.

“Marmoush was fantastic,” Gary Neville told Sky Sports. “There’s certain players that catch my eye, purely because he used to play where I used to play or in the area where I used to play but on the opposite side, he’s obviously left side forward and I’m right-back. And he makes the runs that I wouldn’t want you to make.

“Those really quick runs, that run he made inside [Kieran] Trippier for the first goal, I know Trippier got under it at the end but making that run, you will get joy, any left-winger watching, any right-winger watching, if you run hard and fast in between your full-back and your centre-back on a regular basis, four, five times a half and continue to keep going and towards the box, you will get joy, I promise you, it’s a fact.”

Pep: New signing needs to improve decision making

Guardiola knows he is not getting the finished article with the players he bought in January, though, and explained what will help centre-back Khusanov elevate his game.

“Khusanov can be a great player for the future. It’s really good for him, for all of us, the potential that we visualise he can have,” he said.

“His composure with the ball, the pace from Khusanov when they make transitions, that’s why we bought him. He’s so fast.

“His decision making has to improve but it’s a question of age.”

The former Lens star, who was signed for 40, made a blunder just minutes into his debut for the club but has since recovered impressively following his breakthrough move.
