Ex-Man Utd star slammed for defending Glazers: Factually incorrect and disrespectful
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard has been widely criticised after defending the Glazer ownership at Old Trafford.
The Glazers, led by Avram and Joel Glazer, have owned Man Utd since 2005, but they have been under fire from the club’s supporters for over a decade due to immense mismanagement of finances.
How much have Man Utd spent on transfers under the Glazers?
Man Utd have failed to win the Premier League title for 12 years, despite over €2 billion being spent on transfers during that time, but Howard has defended the Glazer family amid immense criticism aimed at the American billionaires.
“I think they have spent money for Manchester United in certain places and, like, ultimately the criticism of the ownership from fans – of any club but if you look at Manchester United – it is oftentimes one-sided,” Howard told beIN Sports.
“The Glazers own the football club and that in turn is a business. What I’ve always said, because I am an owner of a football club, is that when you spend your billions to own a business then you have the right to run it in any way you want.

“Now that will ultimately prove good or bad business, for sure, but you have the right to run it the way you want and along with that comes criticism. But everyone understands that.
Howard added: “I think they have spent and I think you can take it a step further and look at other clubs. Everton are a mess, not because they haven’t spent. They have spent a lot of money. In fact so much so they got docked points because of PSR.
“So I think the Glazers are spending money. When you look at the squad and the amount of money that was paid for the likes of Sancho and Ronaldo and all these players, the money was spent.
“Was it spent wisely? Well, I’m not sure the Glazers make those decisions. So there are other parts of that question that need to be answered.”
What have Man Utd fans said?
Following Howard’s controversial backing of the Glazers, Man Utd fans have taken aim at their former goalkeeper, claiming that his comments are widely inaccurate.
Factually incorrect and disrespectful, Tim.
No billions were spent. They took control of one of the world’s biggest sporting institutions via a controversial and highly leveraged buy out, loading debt which weighs the club down. Even some involved don’t advocate what happened.— Andy Mitten (@AndyMitten) March 6, 2025
Your missing the point @TimHowardGK. They didn’t spend billions, they spent nothing at all

This guy went on LIVE TV and lied to our faces despite being a former player.

They spent 200 million towards it, Tim. Which they’ve subsequently taken back out through dividends and much more. Leaving us saddled with over a billion of debt between transfers and takeover debt. Which has led to the state we’re in today on and off the pitch. @TimHowardGK

He clearly knows nothing about the Glazers history. They bought the club via a leveraged buyout loading the club with debt which now stands at 700mm & has cost the club not the Glazers over 1bn in debt payments. They haven’t put in a $ since buying Utd. Is he being paid by them?
