Manchester United’s prospects of sending Marcus Rashford on loan to AC Milan have decreased as the Serie A side plays hard ball over contract talks, but a surprising new possibility has opened for the England man.

Man Utd are desperately seeking a solution that will send Rashford off their books for the remainder of the season.

Although Fabrizio Romano insists that the relationship between the attacker and Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim is “not broken” and there is a possibility that the player remains at Old Trafford until the summer, the reality is that the 27-year-old has been frozen out almost entirely under the Portuguese and has not trained for almost a whole week due to illness.

With loan options thin on the ground, Milan are seeking to take advantage of the vulnerable position that United and Rashford find themselves in. The player’s brothers and agents have already been in Italy to talk to the Rossoneri.

The Serie A side have now told the Old Trafford club that they are only willing to pay half of Rashford’s astronomical wage packet, The Times reports. With a salary of €420,000 (£350,000) per week, this was always likely to be a sticking point in negotiations with any club, yet one of the key goals of this deal from United’s perspective was to ease their wage bill.

Sky Sports point out that the Italians are in a strong negotiating position, noting: “Milan, who are not short of in-form attacking talent – and have the Rafael Leao in Rashford’s favoured position off the left – have underlined there would be heavy competition for a starting spot across the forward line.”

The San Siro club’s top earner, meanwhile, makes only €180,000 per week – around the bill they are willing to foot for the Man Utd man.

Marcus Rashford: Como target Man Utd star

Another interesting but unlikely possibility for Rashford, meanwhile, has emerged in the form of Milan’s Serie A rivals Como.

Sky Italia state that the side managed by Cesc Fabregas has entered the bidding – and is rich enough to finance the deal. It states there would be “no problem” money wise.

Equally, though, no official offers have been made for the player to this point.

Como have already shown their financial muscle this season by signing Raphael Varane on a free transfer, though he had to retire due to injury problems.

Man Utd want Rashford to follow Jadon Sancho’s example by having a successful loan stint and increasing his value before the summer as a permanent move looks unlikely at this point.
