Chelsea striker Marc Guiu has found himself unwittingly caught in the crossfire of Barcelona’s political turmoil that have seen sporting director indirectly accused of corruption at Camp Nou.

Guiu left the Catalans last summer in a deal worth €6 million. The 19-year-old has been on the periphery of Enzo Maresca’s side but after scoring six goals in six Conference League matches has clearly demonstrated his offensive capabilities.

Now it has been strongly suggested that he was cast aside at Barcelona for nefarious reasons.

Fingers have been pointed at the current board of the Blaugrana side by Victor Font, the leader of ‘Si al Futur’, which is campaigning for political change at Camp Nou.

He clearly took shots at president Joan Laporta but also unloaded on sporting director Deco for his decision to commit to a deal that saw Guiu shipped out of the club for what appears to have been a bargain fee.

“We have Marc Guiu, we were struggling financially and we signed Vitor Roque,” Font told RAC1.

“If he was the new Ronaldinho, we could understand it and prioritise his talent, but it’s clear that Vitor Roque does not have the characteristics to play for Barcelona.”

Font justified his stance by pointing out Deco’s actions during his time as an agent for D20.

“Deco offered him to the club before he was the sporting director,” Font said. “He was told that Barcelona finances meant Vitor Roque was not a priority.

“The first thing Deco did as soon as he arrived was to sign Vitor Roque!

“What is not normal will raise suspicion. Let them come out and explain it. If Barcelona planned and were transparent, there would be no flops like the Barca Studios lead or the signing of Vitor Roque, which we don’t know the interests behind.”

Deco reacts to claims

Deco, who was never involved directly with Vitor Roque in the position of agent, has responded to Font’s claims by deciding to sue the former presidential candidate, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The former Chelsea player has, therefore, decided to put the case in the hands of his lawyer.

Regardless of Barcelona’s motivation for signing Vitor Roque and selling Guiu, the Blues have certainly benefited from the decision.
