Fabrizio Romano has hinted at which player could kick-start business in the January transfer window, with a Premier League star likely to be pursued by Saudi Pro League sides in the winter.

There was a surprising downturn in spending in Saudi Arabia this year, with teams spending less than €500 million in the summer compared to more than €700m in 2023.

However, while there may have been a decline in the amounts spent, Premier League stars are still set to be targeted and Romano has claimed that Miguel Almiron could be the subject of another approach from Saudi sides after interest in the summer.

“I can confirm guys that, yes, there was MLS interest in Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron last summer,” Romano wrote on his daily briefing. “Saudi clubs also appreciate him but didn’t send any bid.

“Negotiations could follow in January, but for now there are no talks ongoing as it’s still October, too early.

“I’d keep the doors open to Almiron’s exit in January based on proposals received because he’s not an untouchable player at Newcastle.”

Almiron to face January interest after falling out of favour at Newcastle

Almiron has found himself on the fringes of the Newcastle first team this season, having netted just three times in 33 Premier League games during the last campaign.

The 30-year-old has failed to match his astonishing run in the 2022/23 campaign, which saw him win the Premier League Player of the Month award after netting seven goals in seven games.

Almiron has played just two minutes of league action this year and Newcastle have been keen to cash in on him, although an offer from Charlotte FC in MLS was rejected in the summer.

The Paraguayan has been reluctant to leave for Saudi Arabia upon previous approached but, with just over 18 months remaining on his contract, Almiron could be convinced to leave St James’ Park in search of regular first team football.

The likes of Fulham and Everton were also interested in the winger during the summer and recent reports have claimed that the Toffees, along with teams in France and Germany, could also try to sign Almiron in January.
