Real Madrid legend Guti believes that Kylian Mbappe is lacking confidence amid his current woes at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The France superstar completed a high-profile free transfer switch to Los Blancos in July, but his first few months in Spain have been largely underwhelming.

Mbappe has scored nine goals and provided two assists in 18 appearances across all competitions for Carlo Ancelottiโ€™s side, however he has been overshadowed by Vinicius Junior and he has struggled in a centre forward role.

Michel Platini – ‘Kylian Mbappe looks lost at Real Madrid’

Mbappeโ€™s difficulties peaked on Wednesday night when he endured a nightmare Champions League performance against Liverpool at Anfield.

The 25-year-old was pocketed by Conor Bradley and he missed a 61st minute penalty, with Real Madrid eventually succumbing to a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

What has Guti said?

Following Mbappeโ€™s dismal display versus Liverpool, former Real Madrid midfielder Guti told Mundo Deportivo: โ€œWe would all like to know what is happening to Mbappe.

โ€œHe looks unconfident, shyโ€ฆ Moments before taking the penalty [vs Liverpool] he looked scared. In that sense he is surely not happy with his performance and wants something more.

โ€œThere is a lack of confidence, and to that you add that Real Madrid were waiting for him very anxiously and that he has come out of his PSG bubble in which he had everything under control.โ€

Guti, who made 542 appearances and won 15 trophies at Real Madrid, continued: โ€œMbappe has now come to another team where he will surely have to compete with great players to be the best, and all that costs.

โ€œThe Real Madrid shirt is difficult. And thatโ€™s normal. Itโ€™s difficult to think that a player adapts so quickly and so quickly to a club like Real Madrid, where itโ€™s very difficult to play.

โ€œTaking him out of the team would be the worst of remedies, but we do have to protect him. And thatโ€™s why heโ€™s at the best club. Real Madrid, Florentino Perez and Ancelotti are going to protect him because we all believe in him. I believe in him.

โ€œThe easy thing is to criticise and say that heโ€™s not good enough, but Mbappe is one of the best players in the world.โ€
