The Aussie has overseen a run of eight losses in 14 matches, with the overall struggles of Tottenham highlighted by the fact that they are 14th in the Premier League table level on points with Everton and behind crisis-hit Manchester United.

Injuries have undoubtedly played their part in Tottenham’s troubles, but Premier League icon Keane does not believe James Maddison’s absence has been one that has particularly handicapped Postecoglou’s side.

“I’m on about players who would have an impact, a real impact,” Keane said on the Overlap, agreeing that the loss of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and Micky van de Ven hurt the team.

Keane’s brutal Maddison rant

When it was suggested by Ian Wright that Maddison would fall into the same category, Keane took exception.

“We saw Maddison at Tamworth. He was taken off. Tamworth are non-league. People say, Maddison’s the man. When’s he going to step up to the plate? He got relegated with Leicester. He going to get relegated with Spurs!” Keane said, going on a trademark rant.

“Madison isn’t bad when he’s not at the darts. But let me tell you, if you think he’s going to come back and get Spurs top six, you’re in cuckoo land.

– Roy Keane on James Maddison

“He good, he’s a talented player, but if you’re a player in the Spurs dressing room and Madison’s back in the squad, you wouldn’t be looking and going: ‘He’s back today, we’re going to be fine.’

“England had a squad of 300 for Euro 2024, he couldn’t even get in that. Don’t kid yourselves everyone.

“I’ve asked you to name some players who would improve Spurs. You’re naming players and you go: ‘Yeah, they’re not bad.’”

Spurs face Man Utd on Sunday, with Maddison doubtful for the fixture.
