Postecoglou CONFIRMS Tottenham January transfer plan after Vicario blow

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed what he plans to do in the January transfer window following an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Spurs have not had their injury problems to seek this season and Vicario is the latest victim after sustaining an ankle injury in the spectacular 4-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The 28-year-old has suffered a break that has required surgery, with Postecoglou confirming on Wednesday that he expects the goalkeeper to miss out for โ€œmonthsโ€ as a consequence.

โ€œIt’s not going to be weeks, it’s going to be months,โ€ he said ahead of the Europa League clash with Roma.

โ€œI don’t like giving a timeline so early in the process because it puts undue pressure on the player and maybe some expectations.”

Tottenhamโ€™s goalkeeper plan

Fraser Forster will fill in for Tottenham while Vicario is out, with Postecoglou firm that Spurs will not be delving into the January transfer market to add another shot-stopper to their ranks.

He was initially asked about the prospect of Spurs adding a free agent to their ranks.

โ€œYeah, it’s not going to happen. That’s why we’ve got a squad of players. I don’t think us signing a free agent now helps us. Me naming Fraser in the Europa League squad really looks like a radical decision now doesn’t it?โ€ he said.

When asked about a January deal, he was similarly firm.

โ€œWe will not sign a new goalkeeper in January. We trust Fraser Forster,โ€ he said.

Forster has been Tottenhamโ€™s backup goalkeeper since Hugo Lloris left to join LAFC in January on a free transfer.

The 36-year-old, who has six England caps, is not entirely out of condition, having played three games this season across the Europa League and EFL Cup, yet he faces the challenge of playing week-in-week-out in the Premier League for the first time in a couple of years.
