UEFA Euro 2024 schedule: No 2pm game today

admin

It has been five days since Euro 2024 kicked off in Germany on Friday and football fans have quickly adapted their routine to revolve around the three matches taking place each day.

However fans are in for a rude awakening today when they realise there will be no 2pm kick-off.

Today will only have two fixtures from the group stages, a stark change to the schedule fans have become accustomed to since Saturday.

The first of the two games scheduled for 5pm UK time between Turkey and Georgia before Ronaldo and Portugal get their Euro campaign up and rolling against Czechia at 8pm.

So what is the reason for the schedule change? You may be surprised to learn it is nothing new and has been common practice for years now.

Why is there no 2pm Euro 2024 kick-off?

Since the competition increased from 16 to 24 teams in 2016, there has only been two games scheduled on the opening Tuesday of the fixture list.

This is down to the fact that there is now only one standalone fixture which takes place on the opening day of the competition.

Since there are 36 group-stage matches and there is only one game on the first day, it means that all other games had to move up the schedule.

But by putting only two games on the opening Tuesday, it resets the pattern so there will be three games once again from Wednesday onwards.

Leaving only two games on the first Tuesday. There is no need to panic however as after today, the three match days will return all the way through to the final group-stage game.
