Wayne Rooney slammed Liverpool’s ‘school boy’ defending for Everton’s opening goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s men fell behind in the Merseyside derby after failing to clear their lines before Jarrad Branthwaite poked the ball home in the 27th minute.

It was yet another goal that originated from a set-piece for the Toffees but Rooney pointed to Liverpool’s inability to defend.

the former Manchester United striker said:: “We’ve seen this five or six times Everton have one the first contact in the penalty area.

Liverpool will have known this is one of Everton’s biggest strengths. This goal the way they pulled defenders is school boy really.

‘Everton have put them under pressure and they’ve got into half-time deserved the lead”

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher mirrored those views as he criticised Liverpool’s inability to defend set pieces.

‘Awful. How many times have Liverpool given free-kicks away?’ Carragher asked.

That is the name of the game for Everton. Konate, what is he doing? He doesn’t know where he is.

‘The naivety of Liverpool in terms of how you play a derby game’.
