The Hammers, who have started the season well themselves, took the lead through James Ward-Prowse in the 36th minute.

However, City responded in the second half as Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland all found the net.

He said: ‘When I was getting offered the West Ham job, I had actually been in Germany with (Farhad) Moshiri to take the Everton job. It was absolutely done until in the meeting my telephone ran out of battery.

‘The phone rang in the middle of the meeting with Everton – it was (West Ham owner) David Sullivan. I had to say: “I can’t speak right now.”

‘Carlo Ancelotti got sacked that night and (Everton) changed track and took him.

‘I was due to sign the papers the day before and because of that they took Carlo. Sullivan had phoned me to take the West Ham job and I thought, ‘Definitely!’”

Paolo Di Canio wowed on the pitch again, to the delight of West Ham fans.

‘My dream since I used to play in this amazing shirt was to sing our amazing anthem with you from the field,’ he said before the game.

He then launched into a solo of I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles and was joined by tens of thousands of slightly less tuneful fans.

Aguerd campaigns for support for Morocco 

A perfectly observed pre-match silence for the victims of the earthquakes in Morocco and Libya struck a chord with Nayef Aguerd.

West Ham’s Morocco international centre-back has been campaigning for support for his fellow citizens in the build-up to the match. He announced last week the launch of an appeal for blood donors.

He also led the way by posting a photo on Instagram of himself donating blood.
