Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has slammed the ‘appalling’ defending from his former club after Liverpool star Darwin Nunez scored a stunning goal in their Premier League clash.
Nunez, who joined the Reds from Benfica in the summer, scored a stunning goal in the first half of the match, curling a shot into the top corner from outside the box.
The goal was the highlight of a dominant first-half performance from Liverpool, who went on to win the match 3-1.
And Neville, who was commentating on the match for Sky Sports, was left fuming at the defending from United, which he described as ‘appalling’.
“That’s appalling defending from Manchester United,” Neville said. “It’s a great goal from Nunez, but it’s just not good enough from United.
“They’ve got to do better than that. They’ve got to be more alert, more aware, and they’ve got to be more aggressive in the challenge.
“It’s just not good enough.”
Neville’s comments come after a difficult start to the season for United, who have won just two of their opening seven Premier League matches.
The Red Devils have been particularly poor defensively, conceding 14 goals in their seven matches, the most of any team in the top half of the table.
And Neville believes that United’s defensive issues are down to a lack of leadership and organisation at the back.
“It’s a lack of leadership, a lack of organisation,” Neville said. “It’s just not good enough.

Neville also believes that United’s lack of defensive organisation is down to the lack of a leader in the backline.
“You need a leader in the back four,” Neville said. “You need someone who can organise the defence, someone who can take charge and make sure everyone is in the right place.
“At the moment, there’s no one doing that.”

Neville’s comments come as United prepare to face Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils will be hoping to put in a much-improved defensive performance against the Gunners, and Neville believes that they must do so if they are to get a result.
