Sep. 28—Berks County native Chip Lutz added to his impressive golf resume by winning the fourth Society of Seniors’ National Super Senior Championship Thursday at LedgeRock Golf Club.

Lutz, a member at LedgeRock who put in extra time as “host” of the event, closed with an even-par 72 Thursday for a three-round total of 3-under 213.

He was the only player to break par and defeated Gregory Goode (72) of Salina, Kansas, by five shots. Robert Brooks of West Des Moines, Iowa, shot a final-round 71 and was third at 219.

Lutz also won the first National Super Senior Championship in 2020. The event is for amateurs 65 and over.

“The hardest part is knowing you’re on your home course and the expectations that come with that, as well as trying to be the best host you can be, and make sure everyone is having a great time,” Lutz said in a press release from the Society of Seniors. “It was great to bring a national event to LedgeRock. … It was a wonderful event, and I’m pleased with how it all went off, thrilled to be able to host this year, and also win it. It certainly added a special highlight to my golfing career.”

Lutz opened with a 72 Tuesday to take a one-stroke lead, then followed with a 69 on Wednesday to take a five-stroke lead into the final round.

On Thursday, Lutz made a bogey on the par-3 second, but got that stroke back with a birdie on the par-3 fourth. He made another bogey on the par-4 sixth, but made a birdie on the par-5 eighth.

On the back, he made a birdie on the par-4 12th and a bogey on the par-4 17th.

“It got a little testy at times, it always does,” Lutz said. “You expect to have some challenges, and I certainly did. I was pleased with my game today and tried to hold that lead, and fortunately I was able to calm myself and finish down the stretch.”

The weather also was a factor, with all the recent rain and the chilly temperatures.

“Our greens folks really did an incredible job giving us fabulous conditions and presented the course in top shape despite the cold, wet, windy conditions,” Lutz said. “I’m glad we were able to complete the event and we’re thrilled that as many people came here that did and really enjoyed themselves.”
