Michael Pruitt‘s the winner of the Men’s City Championship golf tournament again, though it had been 10 years since he last won that title.
“I was texting my friends ‘I don’t know where this old Michael Pruitt came from’, ” he said, “but it was a good week and everything kind of clicked. Golf was, I wouldn’t say easy, but it was definitely better than it has been.”
The former Idalou and University of North Texas player shot 13 under par over the Labor Day weekend at Meadowbrook, carding a 3-under 69 in Monday’s final round.
He won by three strokes over Jeremy Martin, a former Texas Tech golfer from Slaton, and by eight over Hayden Bowman, a Lubbock Christian University golfer from Lubbock-Cooper. Both shot 68 in the final round, played over Meadowbrook’s Canyon Course.
Jordan Sutherland (69) finished nine shots back, and three-time Men’s City winner Beau Burgess (73) was 10 off the pace in fifth place.
“It was solid all three rounds,” Pruitt said of his play. “Started off the first day, birdied the first hole, hit it really close and just kind of cruised from there. Putted pretty good for the week, which obviously helps. The golf course is in pretty good shape, so if you hit good shots, it worked out to be good results.”
Pruitt previously won the Men’s City three years in a row from 2011 through 2013.
“Everything kind of came together for three days,” he said. “I don’t know where that came from. It’s been a while, but it worked out good.”
Pruitt had a one-shot lead on Sutherland after the first round and a four-shot lead on Martin after the second round. The lead went from four strokes to two early in the final round before Pruitt’s close pursuers bogeyed, easing some of the pressure.
“I haven’t been in that spot in a while, leading,” Pruitt said, “and I was definitely a little nervous. When they bogeyed (hole number) 3, that kind of helped and I kind of got back in the right spot.”
Abel Marquez won the seniors flight, and Steve Bulen was the champion in the super senior division.
The Men’s City is the only Lubbock major tournament that uses an individual stroke-play format. The others are two-man low-ball events.
