Oct. 16—Gov. Mifflin junior Nate Radwanski shot a 2-under 70 and was in a three-way tie for seventh place in Class 3A boys after the first round of the PIAA individual golf championships Monday at Penn State.

Radwanski held the highest place among the seven Berks entries across both sexes and classes.

Wilson senior Kayla Maletto, the Berks and District 3 Class 3A champ, was in a two-way tie for 11th in Class 3A girls after shooting a 5-over 77.

In Class 3A boys at Penn State’s Blue Course, Radwanski was four strokes behind the leaders, Aidan Franks of St. Joseph’s Prep and Wes Lorish of Plum.

Sixteen Class 3A boys shot under par.

Also in Class 3A boys, Daniel Boone sophomore Chase Yenser, the Berks and District 3 champ, opened with a 76 and was in a six-way tie for 38th.

Radwanski, who started on No. 10, shot a 1-over 37 on his first nine. He then made birdies on 2, 4, 5 and 9, along with a bogey on No. 6, to close with a 3-under 33.

In Class 3A girls, also on the Blue Course, Maletto trailed the leader, Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth-Whitemarsh by 10 strokes. Gooneratne was 7-under through 14 holes before making bogeys on 15 and 17 in her 5-under 67.

Maletto finished tied for 11th last year and tied for 12th in 2020. She missed her sophomore postseason due to a hand injury. She made the turn at even-par 36, but played the back nine at 5-over 41 Monday.

Also in Class 3A girls, Exeter freshman Giulia Weisser was in a two-way tie for 28th at 13-over 85.

In Class 2A boys on Penn State’s White Course, Hamburg senior Austin Zweizig and Berks Catholic sophomore Braeden Stringer were in an eight-way tie for 36th at 6-over 78.

Nick Werner of Wyoming Seminary shot a 4-under 68 to take a two-stroke lead.

In Class 2A girls on the White Course, Hamburg senior Erica Gerner, the District 3 champ, was in a two-way tie for 18th at 11-over 83.

Hickory’s Sasha Petrochko shot a 72 to take a one-shot lead.

The final round will begin today at 9 a.m. on both courses. The top 10 earn medals.
