NORMAL — Sacred Heart-Griffin junior girls golfer Izzy Hassebrock made school history.

Ditto the SHG boys golf team.

Hassebrock surged ahead down the stretch to become school’s first individual girls golf state champion in the Class 1A state finals at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur on Saturday.

She gained a one-stroke lead with three holes remaining and clinched the victory with a birdie on the par-3 No. 17.

She ultimately finished with a 3-over-par total through two rounds and led the Cyclones to second place as a team. Hassebrock also swept the Auburn Regional and Roxana Sectional titles.

The individual state title eluded fellow schoolmate, Cal Johnson, by just one stroke in the Class 2A boys golf state finals at Weibring Golf Club in Normal.

But the senior catapulted the SHG boys golf team to its first state title as a group since going back-to-back in 1978-79. He finished even-par through two rounds.

This story will be updated.
