Graham Potter has expressed his concern that Chelsea’s huge squad of 31 players, worth a combined £600 million, is having a negative effect on his coaching.
The Blues have been busy in the transfer market this summer, bringing in the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva, and Potter believes the sheer size of the squad is making it difficult for him to get his message across.
“It’s a challenge,” Potter said. “We have 31 players in the squad and it’s difficult to give everyone the same amount of attention. It’s a challenge to make sure everyone is on the same page and understands what we’re trying to do.”
Potter is also concerned that the sheer size of the squad could lead to a lack of cohesion and understanding between the players.
“It’s a challenge to make sure everyone is on the same page and understands what we’re trying to do,” he said. “It’s a challenge to make sure everyone is connected and understands the way we want to play.”
The Blues have been in impressive form since the start of the season, winning four of their opening five Premier League games, but Potter believes the size of the squad could be a hindrance in the long run.
“It’s a challenge to make sure everyone is connected and understands the way we want to play,” he said. “It’s a challenge to make sure everyone is on the same page and understands what we’re trying to do.”
Potter is also aware that the size of the squad could lead to a lack of competition for places, which could have a detrimental effect on the team’s performance.
“It’s a challenge to make sure everyone is competing for places and that there’s a healthy competition in the squad,” he said. “It’s a challenge to make sure everyone is pushing each other and that there’s a good atmosphere in the dressing room.”
It remains to be seen how Chelsea’s huge squad will affect their performance in the long run, but Potter’s concerns are understandable. With 31 players in the squad, it’s difficult to give everyone the same amount of attention and ensure that everyone is on the same page. It’s also a challenge to make sure everyone is competing for places and that there’s a healthy competition in the squad. If Potter can manage to get the best out of his players, then Chelsea could be in for a successful season.
