Harry Kane should never have left the Premier League despite ending his career-long hunt for a trophy with Bayern Munich, Ian Ladyman told the latest episode of the Mail’s ‘It’s All Kicking Off!’ podcast.

Kane, 32, recorded himself belting out a rendition of Queen’s ‘We Are the Champions’ after Bayern Munich were officially crowned Bundesliga winners on Sunday.

The title medal marks the first major honour of Kane’s career, with the forward leaving England for Germany in the summer of 2023 to amass the silverware befitting of his status as one of the world’s best strikers.

Mail Football Editor Ian Ladyman told Manchester United correspondent Nathan Salt that despite Kane’s success in Munich, the forward should have stayed put at Tottenham Hotspur, joining a bigger English club such as ‘Liverpool or Chelsea’ a year later, on a free transfer.

‘I still have this strange feeling about Kane and Bayern Munich,’ Ladyman told the podcast.

‘I am pleased for him – anyone who has ever dealt with Harry from a media point of view knows the type of guy he is.

‘I still question whether it was the right thing for him to go there. He’s got his medal, but if he had stayed at Tottenham one more year, he could’ve left on a free and had his pick of any club in Europe.

‘I ask this because: where does Kane go from here?

‘Clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, or even Liverpool, would have interest in a fit and firing Harry Kane if the price was right.’

As Bayern Munich are expected to win the German league every season, with 12 of the last 13 title winners medals going to Bavaria, Ladyman said Kane could have found greater success in England if he had stayed.

Guest co-host Salt disagreed with Ladyman’s assessment of Kane’s decision to move to Germany, arguing instead that the English forward is in the best place to lift club football’s greatest honour, the Champions League.

‘Harry Kane would improve all the sides you’ve just mentioned’, Salt said.

‘We can say what we want about the German League, but we’ve seen Kane do it in the Premier League, and he’s still very, very fit. He looks like he’s flying through games.

‘If I were Harry Kane, I wouldn’t be satisfied with just winning the Bundesliga. I would have gone to Bayern wanting to win the Champions League.

‘He has the best chance of doing that, realistically, at Bayern Munich. They have really good players and a monopoly over German football.

‘Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal – they could easily finish fifth or sixth next season. The Premier League is ultra-competitive and you can miss out on the Champions League in one of those freak seasons.

‘That’s unlikely to happen in Germany, so Kane is in the best place to get the two biggest prizes I think you want as an individual player.’
