Ruben Amorim has fired a warning shot to Viktor Gyokeres if the Sporting Lisbon hot-shot is to join Manchester United this summer.
United are in the market for a leading striker and, unsurprisingly, links to Gyokeres have been strong after his stunning performances under Amorim at Sporting.
However, despite Sporting being open to Gyokeresâ departure this summer, the 26-year-old is thought to be hesitant over a reunion with Amorim at United due to his desire to play regularly in the Champions League and compete for trophies.
Speaking to Portuguese outlet Sport TV, Amorim said: âGyokeres deal? I didnât talk to him. But if a player only wants to come to Man United to play Champions League, then he wonât come.
âWe want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.â
Amorim prioritising personality over ability in Man Utd transformation
Amorimâs defiant stance is further evidence of his desire to keep the right player at United, having allowed Marcus Rashford to leave in January due to the playerâs off-the-pitch commitment.
Despite Rashfordâs improved form on loan at Aston Villa, Amorim said earlier this month that he had no regrets over his decision due to his belief in âhurting the club now to do something more importantâ.
Passing up the opportunity to sign a player seemingly unwilling to deliver in the tough times, even a player with Gyokeresâ goal record, would allow United to target strong personalities instead of high-reputation names.

Having seen Matheus Cunha already agree to join the club despite their potential lack of European football next season, Amorim appears clear in his vision for United and what attributes he requires from his players.
United could still qualify for the Champions League if they win the Europa League this season, starting with their semi-final against Athletic Club on Thursday, but Ipswichâs Liam Delap is still thought to be the clubâs top target to strengthen up front even if Gyokeres makes himself available.
