And when asked how he found out about his England selection Scholes revealed it was from rival sports broadcaster Sky Sports.

He said: “I can’t remember to be honest. I think I probably just read it on Sky Sports.”

As soon as he said the name Scholes quickly realised his mistake so stopped in his tracks, saying “oops”.

Humphrey then interjected saying: “Can I just point out it’s only because at that time BT Sport didn’t exist.”

Scholes added he was about to say exactly that while Hoddle sat back in his chair laughing at the whole affair.

Interestingly, it was Hoddle who handed Scholes his England debut in 1997, aged 22.

The then Three Lions boss would later take Scholes to the France 1998 World Cup a year later with the midfielder going on to win 66 caps, scoring 14 goals.

Scholes has been no stranger to embarrassment this season and was heavily mocked by fans after his daughter released a video of him biting her toenails.

Chesterfield players even celebrated a goal by pretending to do the same in a game against Salford, who were managed by Scholes for a brief period last season.
