CHELSEA have won their first Club World Cup after beating ten-man Brazilian outfit Palmeiras 2-1 in extra-time.

The Blues, who failed to win the trophy in 2012, edged out the Copa Libertadores champions with Kai Havertz scoring a late penalty in the 117th minute.

Thomas Tuchel’s side broke the deadlock in the 55th minute after Romelu Lukaku fired home a header.

But their lead didn’t last long as Palmeiras equalised with a penalty of their own after Thiago Silva was judged to have handled the ball.

Up stepped Raphael Veiga, who coolly swept home into the bottom right corner.

The game went to extra-time, and Chelsea were handed a spot-kick after Luan was judged to have handled Cesar Azpilicueta’s attempt.

Havertz, who scored the winner in the Champions League final against Manchester City, duly dispatched his effort in the bottom left corner.

He was then brought down late into stoppage time by Luan, who was shown a straight red card.

Speaking following the victory, match-winner Havertz said: “It’s amazing. After champions of Europe, we are now champions of the world. It sounds better.

“I was nervous [taking the penalty], I have to be honest. It’s a big penalty. It’s just crazy. It was good I kept the nerves. I am very happy.

“I was the third penalty taker but I was the only one left on the pitch.

“My team-mates gave me trust. I dreamed always as a kid of this. This is an amazing feeling for me.”
