Kylian Mbappe is one of the most sought-after footballers in the world, and it’s no surprise that Arsenal were interested in signing him in 2017. However, despite a meeting between Arsene Wenger and the player’s representatives, the Gunners were ‘barely considered’ for a world-record transfer.
The 18-year-old had just broken into the Monaco first team and was already being linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Arsenal were one of those clubs, and Wenger was keen to bring the youngster to the Emirates.
The Frenchman met with Mbappe’s representatives in Paris in the summer of 2017, but the player was not interested in a move to the Gunners. According to reports, the player’s representatives were ‘barely considered’ the offer from Arsenal.
The reason for this was because Mbappe wanted to stay in France and play for a club that could offer him Champions League football. Arsenal were not in the Champions League at the time, and so the player was not interested in a move to the Gunners.
Mbappe eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record transfer, and has since gone on to become one of the best players in the world. He has won two Ligue 1 titles, two Coupe de France titles, and the 2018 World Cup with France.
It is a shame that Arsenal were not able to sign Mbappe, as he could have been the perfect player to lead the club back to the top of the Premier League. However, it is understandable why the player chose to stay in France and play for a club that could offer him Champions League football.
