Manchester United star Luke Shaw has issued a grovelling apology to the club’s fans following their ‘unacceptable’ 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
The left-back, who was one of the few players to emerge with any credit from the game, took to social media to express his regret at the result and hinted at a possible reason for the defeat.
Shaw wrote: “I’m sorry for the unacceptable result yesterday. We know we can do better and we will do better.
“I think the lack of preparation and recovery time between games has been a factor in the last few weeks and it’s something we need to address.
“We have to keep going and keep fighting. We owe it to the fans and to ourselves.”
The 24-year-old’s comments come after United’s defeat to Liverpool, which saw them slip to sixth in the Premier League table.
The Red Devils have now lost four of their last five league games, with their only win coming against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United.
The defeat to Liverpool was particularly galling for United, who had taken the lead through Marcus Rashford’s penalty before being pegged back by a Mohamed Salah double and a late Roberto Firmino strike.
It was a result that left United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fuming, with the Norwegian accusing his players of lacking “desire and hunger”.
Shaw’s apology is a sign that the players are taking responsibility for their poor form, and it is clear that the England international is determined to help turn things around.
The former Southampton man has been one of United’s most consistent performers this season, and his comments suggest that he is determined to help the team get back on track.
United have a tough run of fixtures coming up, with games against Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City all on the horizon.
