MANCHESTER UNITED have identified Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba, reports suggest.
That is according to Calcio Mercato, who claim United have a “strong and confirmed” interest in Milinkovic-Savic ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, the Red Devils are facing a bidding war over the midfielder’s signature as Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are also keeping tabs.
Much will depend on what happens with Pogba, who looks set to leave Old Trafford in June when his contract expires.
It is understood that the France international has turned down a lucrative offer to extend, which would have made him the most highly-paid player in the Premier League.
The 29-year-old has recently lost a section of the crowd’s favour as fans lambasted him in the last two matches against Norwich and Liverpool.
Thus, United are preparing for life after the Frenchman and Milinkovic-Savic poses as an attractive alternative.
And PSG’s interest in Pogba could clear the way for the Red Devils as the Ligue 1 giants wouldn’t need any more additions in midfield if they landed the Red Devils’ superstar.
Juve also seem unlikely to match the Serbia international’s asking price and Lazio are not keen on a player-plus-cash deal.
Milinkovic-Savic’s contract runs out in 2024 with the Romans conceding he is unlikely to pen a new deal and are therefore looking to sell him this summer to avoid losing him for free next year.
